| Posted: | | | | I did indeed write to the contributor and he answered me in a sane way and apologized for what he might have caused.
I explained to him that most noob's (including myself) have done something stupid that we regretted.
Here is what I wrote to him after hearing back from him ...
To begin with ... let me WELCOME you.
Yes ... whatever you LOCK on your end ... will not change not matter what you download from online. If there is an update to a DVD ... you can download the update and it will only change what you do not have locked. As far as locking things ... the only thing I lock on my end is an image sometimes if it is a re-release. They do not allow them in the database. The rest of the information has been extensively researched and can almost always be counted on to be correct ... release dates and all.
I figured you were new as the things you are doing is what someone new here will do.
I did some things like this when I first got here. You are not the first and will not be the last.
The best thing I can tell you is to READ THE RULES and just watch what goes on as far as contributions ... BEFORE ... you attempt any yourself.
This is not as easy as one would think. The people in here take great pride in making this program and database the very best out there. There is a lot of bad information in the database and we are working on it little by little trying to get it straightened out.
My suggestion is to just get your database on your computer all set up and then go online to the database and see what changes are being contributed for DVDs that you have in your own database (you will only see updates for DVDs that you actually have in your database). See what things people are updating. See how the scans look (these, by the way, are the absloute hardest thing to get right and get accepted into the database).
I did scans for a LONG time before one ever got accepted. The only way it did was for me to talk to some of the people who contributed scans and ask for their help to learn what they did to get their scans looking so good. Once I did that ... I was home free. Now I contribute scans and I am proud to say that about 95% or more of my scans get accepted.
You should stop into the forums and visit Contribution Discussion. Very informative stuff in there. Lots of people in there willing to answer ANY questions you may have about contributing to the database.
One warning ... there is a guy in there whose nick is skipnet50 and he can be kinda tough on you from time to time. Do not take it to heart. He just has a hard time getting points across without being crass. He has a lot of knowledge and has been doing this a long time. Try to listen to things he says. He is really only trying to help.
If I can be of help ... do not hesitate to ask. I do not have all the answers but have been around long enough to get you going in the right direction.
Mark
I think he will come around. We were all new at one time and I am sure he is feeling a little bad about what he has done. I would suggest that if he does come out that we try to help him ... not bash him.

His nickname by the way is lexusrx We seldom bash newbies, we all made an make mistakes, as you already and correctly said, so he'll get a heartily welcome when he shows up (And I don't mean this ironic). EDIT: Just checked his site, 52 approved contributions, this makes him one of the most promising noobs ever. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

'The Road Warrior' has been resubmitted with more 'proof'. It seems he might be withdrawing and resubmitting...
Unicus, I think the 25th of March is a Tuesday.

| Posted: | | | | hello everyone, i am the one who got this whole discussion started in the first place. i have since removed just about all my changes to release dates as of now. the few that i have left, prob around five or so are titles that i personal owned (and i have the invoices to prove it) prior to what the invelos db has listed for a release date. ie. Species was one of the first dvds i ever purchased back in 5/14/1997 and the invelos db has it being released the earliest in 8/1997. how can this be right if i was watching the dvd 3 months prior to it being released. I also am a member of widescreenreview and both their original magazines from 1997 (issues 25 & 26) have actual release dates from the manufacturers (as close to press releases as you can get), i will admit that their website if you log on does not give the day of the month on these 1997 titles however, usually the month and the year are correct. |

| Posted: | | | | Nice to read you, lexusrx, and WELCOME to the forums. As you'll probably notice just by reading "your" thread, usually this here bunch is of the helpful and humorous type - DVDP style help and humor that is.
I'd regret if you decided to refrain from contributing to the db in the future, as you seem to be someone taking the task of improving the online db seriously. Maybe you'll reconsider. | | | Lutz |

I don't read anywhere in his post that he's considering refraining from contributing to the db in the future. I don't believe lexusrx is not a newbie. I'm almost positive I've seen contributions from this user in the past, both here at Invelos and Intervocative. | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

| Posted: | | | | Whether new or not, welcome to the forums lex. We need all the help possible to get the db corrected and your efforts are appreciated, just your sources aren't the most accurate. I used to trust widescreenreview as well, I remember flipping through them in Borders to find out what discs were coming out soon back in the late 90's. Then I also recall them telling me a disc was OOP, and it never was (still isn't). Made me a liar on ebay so I quit believing anything printed and started trusting my eyes only. Use your energies for corrections bigger than release dates. Proper release dates are nice, but tricky with old titles. I also know 99% of discs come out on Tuesday. I can think of a couple few that were different, well only one right now. Oliver Stone's first version of Any Given Sunday got released on a Friday for some reason (I recall seeing it on dvdempire's upcoming list, then it showed at all stores in my area, so it wasn't a date mistake. I was also waiting for it since I missed the theater run but wanted to see it badly.) I've seen others come out early just because stores used to break street date. I've had movies up to 2 weeks early but that doesn't mean the release date changed, just a store messed up. |

Lexus:
Having the invoices is helpful and a useful piece of information that I would have included in my notes were I you to help explain what in the sam hill you were doing. Looking at it from the vantage point of another user, who doesn't know you, what you were doing or what your reasons for it were, it looked a little strange to be sure, especially when you were using sources that were indicating something other tahn the traditional Tuesday release dates, as I noted this tradition is something that was started back in the '80s and is now simoly the way it is 99% of the time.

I'm confused . I don't read anywhere in his post that he's considering refraining from contributing to the db in the future. I took that from the PM richierich posted on the last page, that read as follows (bold emphasis by me): Quoting richierich: Quote: "sorry i just assumed that movieweb.com and amazon.com both having the same identical release dates would have the correct date on file, i will not update anymore sorry... thought i was providing correct info. but some of the release dates i know for sure were wrong off by months instead of a few days, i know cause i actually owned the titles prior to what invelos had done for a release date. i will just update my own database than. sorry again" | | | Lutz | | | Last edited: by Darxon |

Ok, then i have someone supporting me, can't anyone else take a look at least for the release date on Species and Twister and see that it was released as part of history on 3/25/1997. How do I get this updated to the main DB so it will be correct.. I Mean Guys & Girls these are part of DVD's history, lets get it right.

| Posted: | | | | If I had Twister and Species in my database, and you are sure these are the original release UPCs (and from what you've stated, I'm pretty sure they are), I'd vote yes on changing them to 3/25/1997.
Of course, I don't own them, so I can't vote on it. |

| Posted: | | | | I do have Twister in my database and just went in and voted YES to change the release date.
I feel that this has been documented properly and that is why I decided to see that it gets corrected.
Thank you lexusrx and nolesrule
