| Posted: | | | | Again people are argumenting based on incomplete/unclear rules. The rules talk about "Modified Title" but doesn't define what they mean with "Modified". For me, any change, even the simple ellipsis (...) is a modification (which is why I think it's totally obsolete that it says to take the title from the credits). Apparently for Skip it is not. But there's nothing that makes his interpretation more valid than T!M's, so Skip please stop your patronizing with "Follow the rules" as if you're the God of Rules and think anyone supposedly not following them is stupid. Why can't you just admit that in some areas the rules are anything but unambiguous. |

| Posted: | | | | In this case I have to agree... The rules for modified titles do not limit itself no matter how much some people wants it too... it says simply.... Quote: The Original Title field will contain the original theatrical title, while the Title field will contain the title of the DVD release. For instance, for the Special Edition rerelease of There's Something About Mary:
* Title: There's Something More About Mary * Original Title: There's Something About Mary It gives an instance... but does not say it is limited to any instance... just says The Original Title field will contain the original theatrical title, while the Title field will contain the title of the DVD release. So that reads to me... the rules support 100% to use the DVD case title in the title field... and if the credits is different ( At All) to put it in the original title field. Does this conflict with the first sentence in the title rules?.. yes... but that don't stop it from being allowed per the rules. | | | Pete |

I really don't understand why a few users would choose to arbitrarily decide when a difference is significant enough to qualify as a "modified title". Either they're exactly the same, or they're different. The significance should not have to be "judged" by each and every user on its own. We've clearly seen what that amounts to: a few users who feel they know it all decide that three dots isn't "significant" enough, and so they arbitrarily decide to chuck the DVD title, regardless of what other users might feel about it. IMHO, those are the ones forcing their personal prefence onto the database, not me. Again: the title of the DVD release and the actual on-screen title ARE different - no matter how significant that difference is. Per the rules, I just entered the DVD title into the "DVD Title" field, and the title from the credits in the "Original Title" field - IMHO, things couldn't more simple. |

And there lies a huge problem IMHO. Since the contents of the master database is all about accuracy, consistency and completeness, I think wordings as "allowed" are recipe for disaster. Idem for conflicts within the rules. Things like that will cause endless discussions/interpretations and Yes-No voting wars. If the rules say A but also allow B, there will be no way to prevent that a profile changes back and forth between A and B. And if we add that the first one sticks (so if it is A you cannot make it B and vice versa) you will end up with inconsistencies between profiles, some will have A, others will have B, and I am pretty sure that is also not something that anyone wants. The rules should simply be unambiguous: either A or B, but not both allowed. |

| Posted: | | | | I used allowed... as that is how I talk... but in my opinion... it is pretty obvious the rules TELLS us to use the DVD title... yes that makes the first part make no sense... but as I said the rules do tell us to use the modified title where the DVD Title does not match the film credits.
It does not say to any extent or limited to any circumstances... just to use the DVD title for the title field where different.
I am going strictly by what the rules say here. Not personal preference or anything else. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | The rules need to be updated to eliminate the conflict and confusion.
It really is that simple. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

| Posted: | | | | [Resurrecting this old thread] - The rules have indeed been updated today: Quote: Title Use the title from the front cover. Quote: Original Title Use the title from the copyright notice if available, otherwise from the film's credits. Another debate solved... |
