ok... it's american software...

How many of those are repeat profiles because of Localities?

Nor do those numbers indicate actual unique users.

No, they don't, but I think they do indicate that the user base is mostly not-american.
Anyway, I have no problem with 1, 2 or 3 fields for names.
And thank to this discussion I discovered that since 2000, in Italy, names must be in the form: name (part2 part3)// surname so no middle names are allowed, only compound names

I guess if Skip was making slot machines and overseas customers complained that they couldn't use them because they only take US quarters, he would say "The machine was made in America. When in Rome do as the Romans do, don't expect to tell Rome how to do things."

In Rome they would not complain about the use of US quarters... the machines would fuse before you can use them, when connected to a 220 V outlet

I thought that we were all unique?

Joe Pasquale is best at the "get on your nerves" song. I couldn't find a decent video of it, but this should give you the idea. Years ago he used to just do verse after verse on his own, in that squeaky voice of his and it was great!

His Sausage Song is good too ...

How'd you come up with that theory? That is certainly not indicated in the data. How many profiles exist is a correlation to releases in localities, not the number of users of the program.

Due to imports, it's not entirely accurate, but the most reliable way of determining userbase would be to look at which profiles from what localities are the most "owned".

As a rough filter my collection shows 829 R1 titles in my collection and 1482 as R2. So it ignores all R0 and may double count some. But I think imports could skew the  info more than you think.

Especially as the most owned are likely to be the blockbuster movies that usually appear in R1 first. (Not to mention accounting for uncut versus cut etc... etc...)

And whilst number of localities will impact the number of profiles in each region it still means somebody has bought it from that locality and that region and submitted a profile for it. It's not impossible but I can't imagine one person choosing to enter a title for muliple localities.

On topic:  In the American realm... middle name is just what we call additional given names.  Plain and simple, it really is all semantics.

On the rest of the thread:

Who cares where the users of DVDP are from?  Users from every country and region are trying to figure out how to enter a French or German or Asian actor's name...  It's the formatting of the actor's name that causes all the problems, not what country the user is from.  And this is exactly the reason for many of the debates (arguments) here on the forums.  We argue over what is a first/middle/last name.  Helena Bonham Carter and just about any of the Asian actors are perfect examples.

Now, the fact that the program was written by an American definitely explains why the names are separated the way they are.  Like others have said, Ken created the program based on his knowledge.  He's learned a lot since then, and we've seen many rule changes to help accommodate entering these names into the program's three fields.  But, what we have is three name fields, and a few rules trying to standardize how we parse the actors names into them.

Could a program change make this better for everybody?  Maybe...  But that is whole different can of worms.

Sure, but that means only one person had to buy it and contribute it for that locality. It says nothing about how many people actually own it.

Just do a region 1 vs region 2 profile count for identical titles. Most time R2 will have many more for the same release.

In the same way your counting method doesn't actually show how many users are based in a locality

I never said it did. I was responding to a post that was using profile counts by region to question if it was an "American" program. All I was pointing out was that reasoning is flawed, precisely because there is no correlation between number of profiles aqnd number of users.

Seemed to be suggesting it to me, but lets just put it down to interpretation.
