Charlie ... or never use what is online : you avoid bold, italics, spelling errors, text that doesn't match with what is on the disk, advertising and spoilers.... I am glad, that you have all the time in the world to do what you want with your DB. You have made abundantly clear to everybody, what your feelings are concerning the online aspect of the DB. For those of us that have other interests or obligations outside of DVDProfiler, the online is the only source of the majority of information that we have in our Profiles. Since, Ken has not changed the way the DB works, in the whole time you have been complaining (years), I do not see it changing now. I applaud your decision to go it alone. I applaud that you have a db that meets your needs. How about, let the rest of us use it as we see fit. Allow the rest of us to work within the confines of the program... Charlie |

That is obvious. But I ask, why not? You know far more than him. Why not encourage him and help rather than give the "correct answer" to his "question"? Talk about showing your true colors and helping one's own ego...seven posts in this thread, SEVEN, and you still haven't offered anything remotely constructive. As a matter of fact, you haven't once even addressed the OP so, please, stop pretending that you care about him as it has become painfully obvious what it is you actually care about. You are asking about what constructive posts I've made? Do you believe your original reply was constructive? If you do then I am at a loss for words. My interaction within this thread wasn't about the OP's question. It was about an ongoing issue I notice in the forums when new contributors are treated with disdain and disrespect. I hate that people trying to improve the database, even if those contributions are flawed. Instead of taking the time to show the error of their ways they get simple snide comments that will only drive them way. You make a point of counting the number of posts I made, and saying none were constructive. Let me ask you this very simple question, that started it all: Was the content of your original reply constructive to the original poster or to anyone that may have similar questions about the rule in question?I think you think I don't like you. And you would be correct. But I do think you know the rules. I also think you do make some great posts, I have given you greenies when I've seen them. But you also make posts like the one I responded to. I can't understand how you can think such posts can ever be seen as being constructive. I don't. I know you would never admit to doing anything wrong, that has been proven. So I'm not asking you to make such an admission. I just hope you give it a bit more thought next time you respond to a new contributor who is just trying to figure the rules out. | | | HDTV: 52" Toshiba Regza 52XV545U AVR: Onkyo TR-707 Speakers: Paradigm Monitor 7 v6, CC-190 & Atom Monitors Subwoofer: Definitive Technology ProSub 800 BD/DVD: Oppo BDP-93 (Region Free) HD PVR: Motorola DXC3400 500GB w/ 1TB Expander BD/DVD/Game: 250GB PS3 Slim DVD/Game: 250GB XBox 360 Elite Special Edition (Black) Game: Wii Remote: Logitech Harmony One w/ PS3 Adapter WHS: Acer H341 Windows Home Server |

That being said, personally I can't stand Overviews that are written in italics. I always fix them to my liking and lock those profiles. I wonder why they should be formatted at all. We don't format anything else that I know of. Back in the Intervocative days, bold and italic, in the overview, were denoted by inserting an apostrophe before and after the 'bold' or 'italic' text. Some people, myself included, felt that this was a little, shall we say, anal retentive as it added nothing of value to the overview. While it did highlight the words, there was no way of knowing which of the two it was meant to be.
Rather than just removing the rule that required this, the 2008 release of version 3.5 added the ability to use bold and italic. Don't get me wrong, I don't know that this adds any value either, but at least we no longer have apostrophes where they don't belong. Thanks for the explanation. I think the Bold and/or Italic formatting maybe adds a little (not much) when used on a single word or sentence. But when used on most of (or whole) the overview it doesn't add anything. IMO. It's just harder to read. And that's what I use it for - (reading it) - to see what the movie is about. If someone thinks it adds any value when used on most of it, I'm interested to know what that is. Btw. @Charlie. I knew about the suppress option. But that just hides everything, also custom formatting I add myself (locally). What I'am talking about is what we collect in the public db. |

| Posted: | | | | It is not that I feel it adds anything, but where would you have us start?
Your opinion, My opinion, Yves opinion. Which one should we use?
We use what is on the cover and "Copy Exactly" as much as the program allows

FWIW I was surprised, when I checked the rules the other day, that we didn't have this already... especially for Bold when one font can look very much like a bolded version of another so how can you say (for example) the overview is in 'Font A' bolded or 'Font B' which looks identical for all practical purposes. | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |

| Posted: | | | | I know that there are some overviews that are completely in italics.
I am not aware of any that are completely bold. If there are, then I would think they would need to be changed, for bold is a comparison of 1 font to another in the same overview.
If the overview is written in a heavy times font, that does not make it bold, it is just the font.

| Posted: | | | | I could get behind an exception to the rule for an overview written completely in Italics, to be entered as a standard type.
Maybe start a poll and find out what the community would think...

| Posted: | | | | I really don't think the poll would help as at the time of the rules writing this same issue was argued about over 3 different threads... and Ken made the decision that he didn't want any exception for all italic overviews. | | | Pete |

So no-one thinks it adds any value? (I'm still interested to know.) Value is subjective and one could ask the same question about any field. The "value" for me is this is the one field that is easy to follow the "rules". I don't have to think about it since all I have to do is write what I see. |

So no-one thinks it adds any value? (I'm still interested to know.) Yes to me it adds value. It shows me exactly how it is on the case as the cover images aren't always good enough to show it with size of text or what have you. And I don't get the whole harder to read thing... italic text is just as easy to read in my honest opinion. | | | Pete |

Contributions are made to allow other users to get correct and useful data. It shoud be a selfless action, and never be an easy way to populate others' databases with errors. In this case, the value of present contribution equals exactly zero. Contributed data is a just a bad representation of what is perfectly represented on the back cover scan. It would be useful if spelling mistakes or other errors were corrected, in order to use keywords, for example. The simplicity just makes the data totally vain. | | | Images from movies |
