... you can play every 3D B-rD in 2D. 3D should get a Feature entry, though, right beside BD-Live and Digital Copy.

Sorry, this is not correct.
"The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Film in 3D" is an example of a BD3D which is NOT playable in standard BD equipment.

( link )

Trying to play this on a standard BD Player only gives a warning message of incompatibility.

Blu-ray 3D will NOT play on a Standard Blu-ray player. That is common knowledge. bbbbb undoubtedly assumed you were aware of that fact. How on earth could someone purchase a Blu-ray 3D only disc thinking it could be played on a standard blu-ray player   ?

Do YOU have this BD?

No.

I'm not interested in football.

Presumably your latest firmware upgrade installation was not successful.

Anyway, who would buy a release unnecessarily crippled only for marketing and promotional reasons? Yours was one of those fancy-new-player give-aways? Or did you get ripped off?

Have I ever said that I could not play this? NO! I have said I have tried it in a standard BD player, to be certain it would not play AT ALL, there, before posting. To your information I have both a 3D BD player, a standard BD player, a 3D BD player in a PC, and a standard BD player in another PC.

Your proof for telling me I was wrong, told us that this BD will display in 2D without special hardware.

( & "as well as allow 3D discs to play on current market 2D Blu-ray players (of course only in 2D).")

I am (still) sorry if I misunderstood your meaning, of course I know I can force my equipment to play every way I want. Even in black&white if I should ever want that.

And, by the way, I am not at all interested in football, but my son is. I am interested in technology, incl. 3D/BD etc.

Tron: Legacy's 3D disc isn't playable on 2D players, either. There are a lot of releases like this. This is why I think it should be a format, not a feature.

There are a lot of Blu-rays that, because of advances in technology, can't play in older players.  Should each new upgraded version be given a new format type because it isn't compatible with first generation players?

Bottom line, 3D is content, not format as the media is still a Blu-ray disc.

3D disc can be backward compatible, but aren't necessarily. This isn't a matter of old players occasionally not working right with new discs. If it isn't made to support 2D, it won't play even on a 3D player if it isn't hooked to a 3D TV. I have a 3D-capable player and the 3D disc from Tron: Legacy won't play. It only gives a message you need a 3D player. The German release of Clash of the Titans is the same way. See this list: Lots of 3D titles are not backward compatible.

Actually: Here's a solution that should make everyone happy: 3D should not be a feature or a new format. This data should be added to the video format section, where it would make sense. You could have check boxes for 2D and anaglyph 3D for DVDs and for Blu-ray, have those, plus the proper 3D format.

Sounds as an very good idea, IMO. The 3D checkbox could have sub-categories to suit multiple formats, ie. Anaglyph, 3DBD, and (surprice!?) side-by-side.

( In my collection I have this "rare" S-b-S BD (not "BD 3D") )

This Ain't Avatar was also released in side-by-side format on Blu-ray. I think there are some DVDs like this, too, but had trouble confirming with a Google search.

How do you define standard BD player? A BD Player which has not been updated to Profile 5 yet? 3D capable BD Players are also standardized, I assume. Are there "standard BD Players" and "BD-Live Players", too? Or are "BD-Live Players" standardized BD Players with Profile 2? Did we ask for BD-Live as a media type? Are there "standard HDMI cables" and "3D HDMI cables"? Or is it just higher bandwith HDMI 1.4? I do not own a game console, didn't they make the Playstation Profile 5 capable by a mere softare update?

All the time I thought I have a standard AV receiver with HDMI 1.4. Instead, I have a 3D receiver. Cool. On the other hand my LG BH10 has a 3D sticker on the package, but there's no 3D at all with PowerDVD7. Weird.

This is different. some old Blu-rays will have problems with a modern disc or two, but in theory, they should all be compatible and it should get fixed with an update. It's not just that some 3D discs won't work in some players. They won't work in any 2D player and were never intended to and won't work in a 3D player that isn't hooked up to a 3D TV.

Via a 3D cable, I guess.

There is no such thing as a "3D cable". A good hdmi cable will do for both 2D and 3D.
You need:
- a 3D BD player
- a 3D TV or videoprojector set

I can confirm that some 3D-only titles will not play if you miss even one of the 2 base requests.
I have a 3d BD drive in my pc, but not a 3D monitor and some title just don't load, they ask for a 3d  monitor to work.

Bottom line: we NEED an extra "voice" for 3D in DVDP. Where or how is up to the developer, but it is needed, indeed.

You're correct regarding HDMI cables...there's no such thing as a 3D cable. HDMI 1.3 is just as capable of playing 3D as a 1.4a cable is. The only thing that HDMI 1.3 doesn't support that HDMI 1.4 does is the HDMI Ethernet Channel.

3D already has an extra "voice" in DVDP. It's called Custom Media Types which are filterable just as the other media types are.

On another note. The reason why FIFA World Cup 3D won't play on standard 2D equipment is because Sony disabled that ability due to distribution rights issues. Sony owns the 3D distribution rights while another company owns the 2D distribution rights. So, it's not a compatibility issue but a money issue .

Custom media types are fine, but local only. It should be good to have a fixed voice in the program that can be contributed for everyone.

FIFA World Cup 3D is not the only disc that won't play in a "Non-3D environment".

GUlliver's Travel or latest Narnia comes to mind, they both came on a separate 3D only disc, along with the 2D standard version on "simple" BD, and the 3D disc won't load on non 3D players. But there are others. The upcoming (in Europe) NIghtmare Before Xmas 3D is another one and the list is growing (i suspect all the future Disney will behave this way).
I can resist everything but temptation.

They should be local only. The majority of users feel that 3D Blu-ray is NOT a new media type so why should they be hampered with having to remove it from their profiles when they are updated with this "new" media type?

With Ace_of_Seven's suggestion (see his post august 21) they wouldn't have to remove anything. 3D wouldn't be seen as a new format, but could still be included in the online database.
