It took 3 years and a half to follow a rule with the result (that was obvious from the beginning) to replace a correct common name by an invented one. For most of accented names, the correct form in small letters will be replaced by an incorrect one since most of credits are capitalized. ateo357 just destroyed hundreds of correct profiles and unlinked hundreds of local databases to satisfy a stupid rule. Yes, let us applaud... For ateo357, I have a list of nearly 1500 names to butcher... to play for the rest of your life... | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |

Just take a look at the screenshots in this thread and you will see that many of the listed movies have accented characters in capitalized credits for other members of the cast but not for Theky Karyo. So this is not an "invented" common name! | | | Recently bought films:

For ateo357, I have a list of nearly 1500 names to butcher... to play for the rest of your life... Since you keep all your data local and you do not accept changes for profiles your only reason for making this post is to troll for a reaction and that is uncalled for. We already know you do not agree with the Invelos database definition of a common name, being the name they are most commonly credited. Based on this definition the change made was correct and you are incorrect from the perspective of what is stored in online database. But again you keep everything local and do not accept these types of updates, so why do you care and continue to make posts like this. Having a disagreement on the Invelos definition of a common name is fine since you have the option (and you use it) of doing whatever you want locally. But what is not fine is your continual inflammatory posts about it. | | | Last edited: by Scooter1836 |

So this is not an "invented" common name! That means absolutely nothing. Just look at "Jacquou le croquant" screen captures (previous page of this thread): opening credits have Tchéky Karyo in small letters, correctly accented. So the credit maker is "supposed" to know correct spelling. Nevertheless, end credits in capitals have no accent on E for Tchéky, but correct accent for Marie-Josée and Gérald. This proves that credit makers are unable to make a correct job, and the rule asking to recopy exactly credits is the best way to put errors in the database. | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |

Surfeur51, I really do not understand why you say incorrect. If the name is "accented", we enter it as "accented". If the name is "not accented", we enter it as "not accented". | | | Don't confuse while the film is playing with when the film is played. [Ken Cole, DVD Profiler Architect] |

If the name is "not accented", we enter it as "not accented". Please speak about what you are aware of. ANDRE, GERARD, MELANIE, JEREMIE are accented, when we speak of French actors. CLAUDE, JEANNE, MARIE, PHILIPPE are not. I easily understand that you do not see the difference, if you did not learn French at school, or forgot its spelling. As for me, I also do not understand all foreign languages... But when a Spanish user tells me how to spell a name in Spanish, I consider he is better than me for what is correct in his language.. | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |

| Posted: | | | | According to the Académie Francaise it is not correct to write capital letters without accents when they actually have one. Therefore it is not the case that the reason for the missing accents in the credits is actually that they are written in all caps but that the filmmakers decide not to write them. It is not possible for us to know for every language in the world how the names are correctly spelled and we can never make sure how a person is actually called without having his/her passport in our hands. The only way to have a system of common names without having endless discussions about how thousands of people are "actually" called is to use the information from the credits. | | | Recently bought films:

No. The only intelligent way is to attribute a unique identifier to every individual, cast or crew. |
