I've found a few things to watch out for: Sometimes BDInfo does not list audio tracks in the same order as PowerDVD. Unfortunately this means we can't take the info directly from this program without also checking with some other software, or stand-alone player. (I think PowerDVD gets it right though.)
Sometimes it also lists hidden audio tracks, like Japanese, that are not accessible from the normal disc menu or even PowerDVD. However, it preceeds these entries with an asterisk. But it also lists certain commentary tracks as hidden, although they can be accessed both from the menu and PowerDVD...

Example from There's Something About Mary (EU/Scandinavian release):
Quote:
DTS-HD Master Audio            English        0 kbps          5.1 / 48 kHz / 24-bit (DTS Core: 5.1 / 48 kHz / 1509 kbps / 24-bit)
DTS Audio                      French          768 kbps        5.1 / 48 kHz / 768 kbps / 16-bit
DTS Audio                      German          768 kbps        5.1 / 48 kHz / 768 kbps / 16-bit
* DTS Audio                    Japanese        768 kbps        5.1 / 48 kHz / 768 kbps / 16-bit
Dolby Digital Audio            English        224 kbps        2.0 / 48 kHz / 224 kbps / DN -4dB
* Dolby Digital Audio          English        224 kbps        2.0 / 48 kHz / 224 kbps / DN -4dB
* Dolby Digital Audio          English        224 kbps        2.0 / 48 kHz / 224 kbps / DN -4dB

So it's not a perfect tool, but I'll keep it around to check on those stereo/surround tracks.

Yep, it lists hidden audio tracks and sometimes has a different order of the audio tracks, but that is not what I use the tool for

I use it only for the Surround Flag and in this apprtment it does a hell of a job

No North, Dolby 2.0 can be Mono, Stereo or Surround. The .1 designation would be for a subwoofer which is not applicable the Dolby Surround. That only applies in 4.0 (I think) and above.

Actually, there are 2.1 discs and even 1.1 discs (I believe EARTHQUAKE was one of the latter).  But I'd agree they're not terribly common.

I have checked The Descent, which DarklyNoon has also checked. DarklyNoon shows surround. I don't. It's now confirmed I can't see this info. Please be careful about removing data based on this tool.

The Descent Blu-ray is also a well known "re-encode" so that could be why. Lionsgate originally released it with an MPEG-2 encode with DNR, and then later silently reissued it with an MPEG-4 AVC encode and no DNR.

They also did this with the Young Guns Blu-ray and some others.

Sorry Ace, I told you you need to remove the copy protection, this mite be one reason and the other reason was given by katatonia, there are two different encodes of The Descent released.

Funny thing is, that bob9000 is on his personal agenda right now and changes all YES votes to NO votes, because of a false conclusion that Ace Of Stevens made.

I am really speechless.....

It is funny that all the other tools that give us information are never questioned, like DVD Profiler itself (reading Disk IDs), Power DVD, all our amplifiers, i could continue to go on for ages.

Only this tool that I brought up is questioned..... and that many people are using for a long time.
And it is questioned because the peopel questioning it makign accusations that are simp,y made cuz they do not have enough knowledge about several releases or how to use this tool correctly.
But still they come up and mess things up AGAIN...

Well,

there is no surprise with this tool, it is just the users that cannot handle it correctly, and this is no surprise to me!!!!!!

But I am thinking right now about completely leaving those forums, too many fullnubs around here, just have to come to peace with myself if I would miss the few nice people here (yes there are really some nice people here )

Overall I have never seen a forum worse than this.

KEN is a real genius in making this program, but how he is handling those forums here is an epic fail.
You should take a look at other huge forums, like blu-ray.com, how those are handled, there are tons of more users and tons of less bad behaviour.

Anyways, I need to sleep over such a decision, as this is one of my biggest hobbies.

This thing is not big enough to get worked up over. The difference between dolby surround and stereo is insignificant and I'd be happy if the software just ignored it since it's so elusive to document.

This here is only the tip of the iceberg, too many things are totally messed up in those forums.
The sad thing is, that many people just do not have much knowledge about what they are talking and yet they pester around and  ruin and hijack most topics with their not wanted opinions based on low intelligence.

But if you look at the worlds population, it should not wonder me, about 90% of the people are plain stupid.....

Is there any way to use this tool incorrectly? I'm just asking, because I haven't found a single Surround-encoded track with it yet... Maybe I've just checked the wrong ones and the next ten ones will turn out to be Surround, but I can't imagine how I could use the tool incorrectly. It seems pretty straightforward: scan the disc, and then look at the results. Right?

The tool STATES that the copy protection has to be removed, I do that cuz I have ANY DVD HD running all the time.
Besides that I cannot think of any mistakes you can make.

So far, of all the (cover labeled Commentary tracks DD 2.0) that I checked, I would say 60 % are Dolby Surround and 40 % are plain Stereo.

I will not post a screenshot of the results in my contributions, this would be insane. I am also not asking for screenshots of the film credits if people entering them.

Here are some titles that have a Surround Commentary track: country states the release I got, those are all Blu-rays

Batman Anthology: all four films UK
Boondock Saints 2: USA
Black hawk Down UK
Cabin Fever USA
Chuck Season 1 and 2 USA
Cloudy with a chance of meatballs USA
Distric 9 USA
Doomsday Unrated USA

If you have one of those and it shows you NOT the surround flag, I am truly out of words
Be sure to have the copy protection removed (tho I am not sure at all if this has an impact, I will test this when I am back home from work)

I realize there are two encodes of The Descent. I have the AVC version, which is the original. Is that what you have? I didn't make any false conclusions. I only said that you show surround and I don't. I wasn't saying you were wrong, only that people shouldn't remove surround info from discs based on BD Info Pro unless they are sure they can see surround info in the first place. If people have established they can see surround info, they can change it to whatever they see.

More then likely Ace has the original release which had the bad encoding which for the on-line DB is the one to use per the rules.
