It appears that this thread is -- at this point -- changing our direction a bit for married names. I'll make an adjustment to the guideline in the List of Common Names.

Back to the whole married name thing.  Talia Shire has one or two maiden name credits as Talia Coppola.  I think this would be a case where married name would be justified as that's how most people would recognize her.

Noted. Thanks.

No, it is not your job.  We are all equal in this forum and none of us work for Invelos.  Nobody can claim that anything they do here is 'their job'.

But I wiil give you part 2 of my question to chew on

Let's say whatever the answer for Question #1 is we produce the following

James (Jim)
James (Jimmy)
James (JR), etc.

Now later down the road, we have someone who finds a new movie that has this actor credited and he doesn't realize that James is the choice, or he is Surfeur and thinks the Profiler way is stupid. And he chooses

Jim (Jimmy) and it gets voted positively and accepted

Guess what the end result of this is. We STILL have a broken alias list. because we now have new Priority (Common) whatever you want to call it, for the SAME actor with no link to the other listings that are using James.

Sorry to burst your bubble here but I already brought up this issue on page 8 of this thread.  I guess you missed it.

I will leave you guys to mull this over. Notice that while I am being called names and insulted...ask yourself why? Have I offered a solution, no...do I have one...maybe, but I am deliberately not talking about it for, I think obvious reasons. You guys are insulting me and calling me names because I am doing nothing more than pointing out problems that I see. I don't consider myself any more intelligent than the rest of you, but sometimes you give me cause to wonder, when instead of discussing a problem we resort to insults and attacks. I am a little surprise at my friend Unicus, for failing to understand this but...com ci, com ca. I am very disappointed in everybody at the moment.

You can be as dissapointed as you like but it this attitude that is causing people to be insulting.  I don't know how many times I have pointed this out to you and you still don't get it.  I am trying to help you out here.  More and more people are seeing you as arrogant and superior.  You talk down to most of the forum and imply that you know more than anybody else.  I know you will protest and claim otherwise, but that is how you are perceived and perception is reality.

You are free to disregard my opinion, but believe me when I tell you that other users are telling me these things.

And, I must say that it DOES matter what the common name is.  How does one do a search if the common name link is some off-the-wall or out-of-left-field common name that Joe Blow came up with on his own?

That is exactly why we are having the polls and discussions to formalize how we arrive at the names.
We're not going to have "off-the-wall or out-of-left-field" common names.

Like it or not ken wants us to carry on using the credited as feature. The best thing we can do is create some guidelines ourselves as oppose to sitting back and waiting indefinitely for Ken to produce a name database from the current online database (which is still largely from 3rd party sources anyway).

He doesn't have to create a list.  There are other ways to set up this common name mess that don't require us OR Ken to create any names, or muck around with polls and discussions that have no force of law anyway.  But hey, if that's how you all want to proceed, go for it.

... I don't particularly want to use my local DB as the guinea pig for something that isn't 100%, especially if there are no clear standards in place.  It is simply too damn much work to fix afterwards...

Of course, you are true when you say that about common names, even if you wrote I was wrong to write almost the same thing about spelling mistakes...

Don't try to equate this with spelling mistakes in overviews that are PRINTED on the cover.  It isn't even close to the same thing.

I really shouldn't bother waisting my time pointing to the 'common' name database here that we are working on as a reference for all to use.

Then I probably shouldn't waste MY time either, by pointing out that we already have a database with hundreds of thousands of entries in the name fields.  All that is required is using that data, and it can be done without one of US having to lift a finger or decide which name is the correct one, etc.

I know we have a database with hundreds of thousands of entries - but that spoilsport Ken won't let us use IMDB!
