As I understood the explanation, if you have an actor with a BY attached and a profile comes along without, it will merge the new actor with the existing entry, provided you don't have a second entry for that name. I forgot if it would strip the BY... (but that wouldn't be a problem, as you only have that name once, so the BY wasn't really necessary and linking is maintained).
