Maybe the Gold Standard is what we already have - and all we need is some way to protect a profile once it reaches that level. That's what Task3 is supposed to figure out. Yes, we already have a 'Gold Standard'...the one that is spelled out in the rules. Some users do not like that standard, for reasons they have already expressed in other threads, and that is what all these debates have been about. I have no problem with your proposal, I just don't know how it will end up as no matter what standard is chosen, somebody is going to be left out in the cold. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. In order to download these "gold" profiles, you would have to bypass Profiler's downloading from Invelos and make it download from somewhere else.
I'm not entirely sure you wouldn't be violating some terms of Profiler's license by doing this.
If anything, I see this as more of a sign of frustration from users by the lack of developer presence with the database and forums, and the inability of the developers to participate and resolve the issues and debates that come up with maintaining a large user built database such as this. (Not to mention lack of moderation.) | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

I'm not entirely sure you wouldn't be violating some terms of Profiler's license by doing this. There is no requirement, by invelos, to use their database. We have been given the ability to modify all of the data in our local and I know that there are users, two that I know of for a fact, that don't use any data from the on-line database. What is basically being suggested is the creation, and sharing, of custom profiles, so I don't think this would be an issue | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | Hmm maybe I am reading mediadogg's brief different to other people, but it looks to me as the idea of this gold audited is to ensure profiles are correct and within the current profiler database rules. I believe the idea is to ensure profiles are functionally correct and not just copies of existing profiles which may themselves already had errors within them.
I can also see the extra functionality where there could be additional fields to cater for other things not currently under the rules ie: surfeur51's desire to use correct name spelling. This is easily obtainable under a database system as an optional cast field thus people could prefer to use that within their own local profiles.
mediadogg.. what sort of hosting would be required for the website? |

(Not to mention lack of moderation.) As for plug-in: see the task list in the OP for possible options. The middle part mediadogg already responded to. By locking the entry or minimally cast and crew you have as much control as you want over what you accept from the Invelos online db. As for the last part: I've been with this program, site and by consequence its developer since (I think) 2004. Invelos/Ken has always had a very laid back attitude when it comes to giving insight in development (unless a new release is imminent) or forum control (his only major intervention in all years was to forbid (finally...) political threads and that only came because some of the resident trolls couldn't seperate emotion from discussion very repeatedly). As a result, the last 8 years of my involvement, I've seen only one consistent approach by Ken and that is to let all things run its course and take up only if a clear conclusion is reached. IOW 8 years of complaining by many in 'signs of frustration' is a constant. Perhaps I do not like it but it is the way it is. Yes, of course this initative is one of those points where the users take control. I've seen this happened more than once. The wiki is an example, though that is one that petered out. Let us hope what mediadogg proposes ties in with Invelos' interests for any new version. If not, we can at least end some of the 'signs of frustration' by pointed to those 'gold profiles'. | | | Eric

mediadogg.. what sort of hosting would be required for the website? This is how I read things too. The rules list what we should do and how to do it. Therefore, to me, a 'Gold' profile would be a profile that reaches that benchmark. I see this as a the group agreeing on each field within profile. For example, the sound section. One person could input the data and then the other members of the group would all examine that data for accuracy. Personally, I feel this collaborative approach would be excellent; as there would be no bruised egos when errors are identified. I would certainly be open to submitting any profile I do a full audit on for intensive scrutiny. I will say this though....the fact that the majority vote in this poll are the 'don't care' group it really does support what I said the other day: most users are lazy and selfish and don't care about this program. | | | Last edited: by Pantheon |

Well, maybe you could set up more than one standard. What I mean: You will have a 'gold status' for a complete profile within the Invelos rules. Additionally you may have a 'linking gold status' with profiles only containing cast & crew with perfect linking. (Don't tell me, that would double your work - if you're not interested in one of them, leave it alone.) Of course there's no way to make everybody 100% happy. | | | |

I definitely know myself to be lazy and, by being human (I think), I know I can be selfish. Doesn't mean I do not care about the program, its central data, Invelos or Ken and family or any forum member. On the contrary. But it doesn't mean I cuddle everyone or anything (yuck...). Way in the past a claim was once made that DVDprofiler had at least hundreds of thousands of users. Only very few present themselves at the fora. Guess it is kind of a human thing. | | | Eric

True, but there might be a number of the don't care group who decide to have a look on occasion and might submit just one thing on one profile. They might end up doing this on a few occasions, they might end up becoming regular "profile checkers". You never know. Oh and PS mediadogg. I would suggest, to protect the Invelos database integrity that the site merely show a few lines for each ID (eg: id/upc, title, maybe overview) for the public. Only showing the entire profile for a logged in user and make people use the same login they use on these forums. | | | Last edited: by Parsec |
