But I am convinced that most users see it as a separate entity next to DVDs and Blu-rays.

Nope...just you and some other guy

If you go to your local shop, I bet the 3D Blu-rays have an extra shelf and are not stocked together with normal Blu-rays.

You're kidding, right? I normally have to order them from Amazon.com because my local Target (major chain store BTW) doesn't always carry them. When they do have them they order only a few copies and they're stacked right there with the rest of the Blu-rays.

I would see 3D Blu-rays either as a new medium or in the Edition pulldown menu. The features section is the wrong place. Features are additional things you find on the Blu-ray or further give-aways like Digital Copies. But a 3D Blu-ray is not an additional thing, it is an entirely different thing altogether. It is not what is recorded on the medium, but how it is recorded.

Sorry, but the majority disagree with you, including me. Blu-ray 3D belongs in features…period. It’s not a new medium…it’s a Blu-ray disc for crying out loud!

I have made custom Media Type for Blu-ray 3D.
Both Blu-ray media types checked.
And regular 2D version disc added as child profile.

I have also done this. I went one step farther and created a tag for Blu-ray 3D so I can pull just those profiles that have the "Custom Media Type" checked. I also used the Logo, which can be found on the internet. If you save it as a png file and pick the proper dpi, it looks exactly like JaLe shows it. I'm at work on my Mac and I can't remember what dpi I used. Play with it until you find the look you like.

New media or new feature i second the fact that there is a need for an added option in dvdp.
I have many Blu-Ray 3D and i would like to be able to filter them with something other than custom check-box. It would be nice if they can show up on media stats, too.
Another nice option would be the possibility to filter Real 3D and "old" anagliph 3D (and this one is present on many dvd's, too).
I can resist everything but temptation.

... you can play every 3D B-rD in 2D. 3D should get a Feature entry, though, right beside BD-Live and Digital Copy.

Sorry, this is not correct.
"The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Film in 3D" is an example of a BD3D which is NOT playable in standard BD equipment.

( link )

Trying to play this on a standard BD Player only gives a warning message of incompatibility.

Tron: Legacy's 3D disc isn't playable on 2D players, either. There are a lot of releases like this. This is why I think it should be a format, not a feature.

Sorry bbbbb, this is the standard text used on many (combined) 3DBDs. I actually have this 3DBD, and it is NOT playable at ALL in BD-players w/o 3D capability.  I actually tried this, to be sure, before my posting.

If this 3DBD was playable in 2D, why would they say "Only plays in 3D" on the cover?

It is no second BD playable with standard (2D) enclosed.

This is not only standard text but part of the profile 5 B-r 3D specifications:

"backwards compatible, allowing 2D discs to still play on 3D Blu-ray players, as well as allow 3D discs to play on current market 2D Blu-ray players (of course only in 2D)."

For marketing and promotional reasons.

We could also make "Region A" a new type of media. For the B-rDs which are not playable in Region B and C.

Do YOU have this BD?

Yepp, in fact it is.
Trying to translate the full sentence: "When map and terrain do not match, the terrain will always win"
Do you have a similar phrase?

Not that I can think of.  (Perhaps someone else will chime in.)

"Terrain trumps map" more clearly conveys the meaning to my American ears; I might start using that when the need arises.

I'll try to remember! This gives meaning even in Norwegian. "Terrenget trumfer kartet"
Thanks !

No.

I'm not interested in football.

Presumably your latest firmware upgrade installation was not successful.

Anyway, who would buy a release unnecessarily crippled only for marketing and promotional reasons? Yours was one of those fancy-new-player give-aways? Or did you get ripped off?

bbbbb is absolutely correct in that a Blu-ray 3D film can be viewed in 2D on a Blu-ray 3D player. If your system uses active shutter glasses you need to go into your HDTV's menu for 3D Settings and turn off 3D eyewear. The film will then be viewed in 2D.
