I realize this is a very old thread, but I've been searching for over an hour now without finding a definite answer. I have a very large DVD/Bluray collection which includes many CD/DVD combos- ie: CD release with a bonus DVD included. I think, from reading many comments in this forum, that I should enter these by Disc ID. I think this makes sense as, even though the UPC is for the combo, many times the DVD has a completely different title than the CD and I feel that the DVD title (not the CD) should be used for the profile.

Case in point: while working on a stack of these DVDs I first tried "Add DVD" and searched for the artist. I found a few that way, but not most. Next, to make it easier, I went into the DVD Profiler settings and turned on "Add DVD if not in collection". This worked well and I manually added several before I got to one which it "found" and asked if I wanted to add it to my collection:
UPC: 081227980641
Title: Jeff Beck: Emotion & Commotion

The problem with this is that "Emotion & Commotion" is the title of the CD, the DVD title is "Jeff Beck: Live From the Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007". Quoting the Contribution Guidelines:
“DVD Video”: These discs, included as bonus discs with CDs or video games are accepted, but only contribute the DVD Video information.

Wouldn't that include the DVD title? I also have several CD box sets which contain 2 or more DVDs, each with different titles- for example, Tom Petty "The Live Anthology" set which contains 2 DVDs:
1. DVD of 400 Days, a previously unreleased documentary film
2. DVD of New Years Eve 1978 Santa Monica, CA concert (also, previously unreleased)

I hadn't added that yet, but just checked:
UPC: 093624979999
Title: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: The Live Anthology: The Definitive Live Collection
SRP: $149.98 (correct for the whole set which also contains 5 CDs, vinyl of "1976 Official Live 'Leg bootleg album" and a bluray audio only disc.)
This profile was submitted as a boxset including the 2 DVD titles as child profiles. The covers are of the boxset.

Both "400 Days" and "Live at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium" have separate profiles submitted by Disc ID with the correct back/front covers for the individual DVDs. Both have SRP as $0.00, which would be correct since they are not, or weren't, available outside of the set.
Well, I have many more, but here's just one more example:
The Beatles (The Original Studio Recordings): 16 CD/1 DVD boxset. The DVD is titled "The Beatles: The Mini-Documentaries".

I really wish there were a definite decision on this. It would eliminate much duplication and confusion!

What you could do with for instance the Jeff Beck release is use the CD title in the Title field (the contribution rules tell us to use the title on the front cover - what goes into the Title field should reflect the title of the release, not necessarily the "real" title) and use "Jeff Beck: Live From the Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007" in the Original Title field (which according to the rules can be filled with the on-screen title).

The way you describe it, the Tom Petty set seems to have been set up correctly. In the case of box sets, there's no way to contribute the set as a whole by Disc ID, as that would make it impossible to contribute the individual DVD titles by Disc ID (unless one of them is actually a 2-disc title; then theoretically one could be used for the parent and one for the child profile). So for box sets, there seems to be no alternative to using the UPC.

For "simple" CD/DVD combos the rules are indeed unclear, but as in principle the UPC is for the CD, magazine, book or whatever the DVD came with, I would be inclined to submit by Disc ID. Moreover, there's a chance that DVD Profiler won't validate the UPC in question, and then you can't submit it anyway.

Thanks! I hadn't thought of using "Original Title". I guess- when submitting by UPC- that would make sense. The problem is that I could go ahead and re-submit the same disc by Disc ID using the title from the DVD. That would create a duplicate in the database for the same release. I'm not planning on doing that, but I've found other releases where that has been done- the Tom Petty Live Anthology being one.

Why only when submitting by UPC? I don't see a real difference with regard to Title/Original title between submission by UPC and by Disc ID.

I'm sorry, I was referring to my original post and the specific instance where a CD with bonus DVD is released, but the DVD should have completely different profile information from the CD. In the case of the "Jeff Beck: Emotion & Commotion", UPC 081227980641 (submitted by another person), the title is the CD title, Production Date is 2010, etc. The bonus DVD (which only came with an imported version of the CD) is titled "Jeff Beck: Live From the Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007".

I'm not planning on making any changes to someone elses contribution, unless someone more knowledgable than myself agrees that it isn't correct, but I have MANY similar discs which aren't in the database which I'm working on to submit. I just want to be sure I'm submitting the correct information.

No problem, just wanted to make sure I'm understanding you correctly.

Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you! Good luck!

P.S.
With regard to the existing profile of the Jeff Beck release: I would suggest submitting a contribution doing 2 things:
1) adding the DVD title as Original Title;
2) correcting the production year (if that's what you were talking about, i.e. not the release date) from 2010 to 2007.

@SallieKr,

Just a reminder that BulkEdit can create profiles from CSV and XML (Both of which can be edited with Excel). If you think manipulating spreadsheet columns could help you at all, then you could create profiles templates in Excel (UPC, Title, Sort Title, Original Title, etc. ) and then load them with BulkEdit. From then on, finish up the profiles in the DVDP editor.

This would help in the case that you have a lot of similar information that can be cut and pasted between spreadsheet cells or columns.

Another time saving technique would to use the DVDP cloning tools (DVD Copy / Paste).

Perhaps by using one or both of those methods, your huge task can be cut down to a more manageable size.

To get a sample into Excel you can export a couple of profiles to XML and CSV (using the CSV Export plugin), and use those to create the correct column headings.

One caveat: Excel will make mincemeat out of UPCs - it will try to convert them to floating point numbers unless you force the UPC column to be text, or precede the UPC with a single quote ('). Bulkedit strips the quotes off when importing.

(Edit: Thank you for your kind support.)

I tried BulkEdit today...  but it's confusing! I now have over 200 discs which aren't in DVD Profiler. Is there a support thread here for it? I missed the comment about getting the "correct column headings", so I'll try again tomorrow. I did manage to get a few test DVDs to import- so I'm on the right track.

Edit: I must have done something wrong yesterday, as this morning I got it to work perfectly. And I forgot to mention- I really hate Excel. Having to go through and manually set every field to "Text" is a PIA. Sometimes I use Google Sheets. For this project, though, I'm finding it easier to manually create a CSV file with the discs I want to add.

And- you're welcome! I support software I use. (the donation was for the profile assistant app.)

I'm slowly getting everything contributed, but only the actual performance DVDs. Up to 73 now- some were updates to existing profiles, but most were missing in the database. About 40 left to go, then on to the 97 CD/DVD's.
