Sure, but the three parts cannot be profiled individually, since they have no (opening and end) credits of their own on the actual DVDs. Again: compare the 2003 3-hour miniseries Battlestar Galactica.

Correct! For DVDP profiling purposes, this is not a TV series.

I'm sorry but the lack of credits does not define a profile. We have plenty of profiles already in the database that don't have credits.
I question the point of having child profiles in a situation like this, as there is no extra information derived from these profiles, but I don't question the right for this person to submit child profiles for this mini-series as long as they're not removing data from the parent profile.

Technically you're right, of course. There are plenty of profiles without credits, because the source DVD has no credits. But that's not exactly the situation here.

My question to all those who would want to submit child profiles for this particular set would be: what are you going to put in them? (running time might be the only unique info in them...)

And IF you're going to put (cast and crew) credits in them, where are you going to get them from? Copying them from the overall credit lists would be dead wrong, IMO, as that list covers the entire miniseries and not just the part on the disc in question. There is no sensible way to deduct accurate (for that particular disc, that is) credit lists from the overall credits.

So I agree with you: whilst a user may technically have the right to submit child profiles for this set, I can't see the point of doing so, because it will only lead to data duplication (with the one exception of running times per disc).

.
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

For DVD Profiler purpose: It is not your decision to call.

Tim is very good at forcing his personal preferences on the database, when he finds a hole he can exploit. He doesn;t bring it to the forums, nor dies he explain it in his notes, he just DOES it. Sorry, Tim, it's TRUE. He has managed on more than one occassion to slip his personal prefernces into the database.

Haven't figured out how he has determined himself to be the ultimate arbiter of the meaning of the Rules but he has.

Just for the record, Skip, in case you forgot: you gave the very same opinion as T!M on page 1 of this thread:

I agree Charlie, this is not a Boxset under the Rules, except for twisting them. Your logic is 100% correct. Dune was a made-for-TV movie, NOT a series.

Now would that be a "personal preference" as well?

While I do agree with Tim on this. I don't agree with hims imperius atitude, to the point that he acts ON his own relative to Contributions.

I don't know whether the mini-series in question had credits when broadcast or not., I'll bet it did.
But, I do know that when parts of a mini-series or series are put on dvd they often combine them into one piece and they are divided into parts because of disc space.

I have
Diirected by John Harrison for TV
Frank Herbert's Dune; UPC 012236-115175; 2 discs; 265 min.
Frank Herbert's Dune: Special Edition Director's Cut; UPC 012236125297; 3 discs; 290 min.

Directed by Greg Yaitanes for TV
Frank Herbert's Children of Dune; UPC 012236138723; 2 discs; 259 min.

None of which have I converted to as parent/child profiles nor do I intend to convert them into parent/child profiles for the reasons already stated.

I also have both movie version, the extended version is a double sided disc.
I they are ever offer on Blu-ray, I'll bet they will be one piece.
We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.

Me and my "imperius atitude", "relative to contributions"? Shall I remind you of a few of the totally incorrect, purely personal preference contributions you currently have pending?! I'd say you're certainly in no position to make (false!) accusations like this, because you're essentially describing every single one of your own recent contributions. Anyway, I suggest we try not to descend into an ordinary mud-slinging match just this once - especially since we actually agree on the issue at hand. I'm sorry if you didn't like the way I put it - since you're much better at that than I am, I'll gladly leave all the "smooth talk" to you.

I reiterate that I feel that for DVD Profiler purposes, this is not a TV series. For the record: I've carefully re-read the rules on "TV Series", and I see absolutely nothing there that would support splitting this up into child profiles. I'd have thought that the fact that, as others have pointed out, there's basically nothing to actually put IN such child profiles, gives us a nudge in the right direction.

IMHO the key is that it's one feature with one set of opening credits and one set of end credits. Taking that into account, the only thing I see in the rules that actually applies is this line in the "Disc ID's" section: "If a film spans 2 discs, add (Part 1) and (Part 2) to the “Main Feature” description." That seems appropriate, yes, but child profiles? Uh-uh.

The disc id's are already included in the disc section of the profile.

Just because the Disc ID's are already in the profile doesn't mean to say that they will be offered for download when you try to download the parent profile.

I have found, although it maybe a bug, that unless the child profile id's are listed in the box set section in the parent profile, you won't be offered them as part of the parent profile when downloading. So it's no good just having them in the Disc's Section.

Steve

No, they are not offered for download.  The Id's are part if the information in the profile.  Similar to a movie with a bonus disk.  The idea of offering download would be  like having a 2 movie box set.  The parent would cover the info for the box set, the children would cover the individual movie.  Then, since the children have the info for the movie, the disc would be offered for download via the disc id as a child.

Dune has three discs for one production.  In the profile, it is disc 1 disc 2 disc 3.  No children needed because there is no separate info for the individual disc, except for the run time of that disc (this would be the only difference).  Therefore there would be no need to download the additional profiles, because there is no need for them.
