Let's stick with improving this program. Some of those other collection program ideas already exist out there in excellent products (I have a great ones for my comic books and my CDs).

Both you and Mark mention 'improving' Profiler....how?

Maybe I'm being obtuse but I can't see how this program can get any better without taking it to the level of data-for-datas-sake. As it stands it holds all the important information and has some very cool bonus features to boot.

the Database Query plug-in alone shows a huge amount of stuff missing from the actual program

I do not believe Ken or Invelos made this plug in.  So how does this pertain?

huh? that's exactly the point. It is not a part of the program made by Invelos/Ken, but it should be. That's what Pantheon asked for: things we think are missing from the program in it's downloadable version

Do you realize how many stupid requests make it into the "requested features?"  Using your criterium the program would NEVER be finished even if it were perfect.

Yes, from time to time there are some truly stupid requests in the request forum.  There are a great deal more that are probably useful to some users, but nothing I'd ever use.  And there are some real gems in there as well.  Are you trying to imply that there are not any good requests out there?  Because I certainly can't agree with that.

Anyway, I cast my vote and gave a reason why I don't want to see Ken move on to other profilers.  I even explained my explanation.  I'm moving on now.

Not bad taste, just something we like to have fun with. For example, in the year and a half that the Invelos site has been up a Google Search@invelos.com will give you 155 results on CDProfiler. When we were at Intervocative, if I recall correctly the same search yielded around 2000 results. Yes, it is an OFT-requested idea and a very OLD one at that. It is so frequently requested it has become something of an inside joke.

Ah, I can see why this becomes a tiresome topic then. Although, to me, this just means that there is quite the demand for it. And like I said, I agree with many others here in that I don't think adding anything to Ken and Gerri's plate would be a good idea. But what about hiring a few people to take the Profiler Framework and expand it to other media and then charge an addon fee or a whole new program purchase, which would (I would imagine) more than pay their paychecks.

I just like this program so much so far that I would love to use it for other then just my DVD collection. Like I also said, I do this with Manual Profilers locally, but it's far from perfect and very basic. I'd pay for a more flushed out way of cataloging games and music. Just my opinion though.

That is Ken's call and above our pay grade. It has been suggested more than once and thus far...he has not chosen this course.

Very true! But I'll continue to keep my fingers crossed...until then, I'll just continue making my manual profiles.

Oh boy, can't believe I'm jumping into this, but I have so much respect for what Ken has done with this program. As I have posted before, Profiler is not simply a database for storing information about DVDs. It is a complete system - a paradigm that reflects not only a way of life for DVD and movie enthusiasts, but reflects careful study of relevant industry information (e.g. ratings, cast, crew), technical information (e.g. reading Disc IDs) and user needs (e.g., web database, mobile versons).

As a writer of plugins, I am always blown away at how much innovation Ken has built into the program. We get so used to it, we take it for granted. One simple example: when you click on the regions box, you get a drop-down with checkboxes, tailored to DVD vs Blu-Ray vs. HD. Ask any programmer - that takes a bunch of code and hours of debugging and testing. That's just one of hundreds of things that are built-in to Profiler to give a user experience that is so satisfying. You "can't put your finger on it", you just know it seems to be so much easier and fun to use.

Think of a continuum with pencil and paper on the left, Excel just to the right, MS Access a bit further to the right, and Profiler somewhere miles over to the far right in terms of capability and ease of use. That takes a lot of time, effort, code, dedication. We get it all for a ONE TIME LIFETIME purchase of $30. Unbelievable.

So, while it is perfectly legitimate to want something "just like" Profiler for CDs, etc., be careful what you ask for - and what you might have to give up to get it.

On the other hand, we could enhance the chance of getting some "surprise" enhancements to Profiler, if along with the cries for "just like that", we give specific specifications for what would be required. You won't be far down that list before you realize how much extra work we would be asking Ken to do, but at least there would be a list for him to look at, and maybe in an idle moment (ha!), he just might whip up some code for a feature or two ...
Thanks for your support.

All I can say is that if he ever decided to start a Video Game Profiler he should contact me  Not because I'd buy it but because I'd consider developing it for the right money

Just off the top of my head, it's ridiculous that I still have sets where I have to build manual profiles because there are two movies on the same side of the disc.

The one mentioned above would be a great improvement, but the thing I wish the most is that some day we would have separate databases for Movie data and DVD data.
