But, we know that's not the case.  At least, we SHOULD know that's not the case.

If that car you are talking about cost $800, then the other car with support would cost less than $1600.  Then, you talked about buying a spare.  Plus, you still can't get oil changes, gas, tires, etc.

In Germany you could buy a HD-DVD player for 80€ (the drive for the Xbox 360 for incredible 10€). A Blu-ray player costs at least 350€, but more like 500€.

Every HD-DVD fan I know of (or have ever read a statement from in a DVD forum) has bought at least one player in spare - so the problem of not getting any support or repairs is non existent.

I bought about a hundred HD-DVDs with an average purchase price of less that 9€. An average Blu-ray disc costs at least 25€. As someone not watching a movie everyday (not even close) these 100 discs will "last" for two years. By then I can buy a Blu-ray player for less than 200€ and Blu-ray discs for less than 15€.

A simple calculation that most of you "Hey, I won the format war" Blu-ray show-offs simply don't get.

If they stop making your brand of car would you stop driving it?

Good question.  My answer would be no.

I have a question, also.

If people were constantly warning you not to buy a certain type of car, because it would not have any support (no tires, no engine parts, no dealers, no anything) after a short time.  You buy the car anyway and support stops soon afterward.  Don't those people have a right to poke a little fun at that person?

No, not if the brand new car was sold for 800 bucks - a price so dirt cheap that absolutely everyone who bought one simple bought another one for spare, while all mockers paid more than 5000 bucks for their new car that did not even have a final construction.

But, we know that's not the case.  At least, we SHOULD know that's not the case.

Well, let's just say I have over 120 Movies on HD-DVD and I am still very happy with it. I am certainly not gonna throw away all that. Now I simply buy Blu Ray's. But I am gonna keep my HD-DVD's. Also I had my Laserdisc player repaired about 8 years after they stopped producing them. So I am pretty sure I will get my spare parts.

Warner already has plans to eventually stop producing DVD in favor of Blu-ray.

Where did you get that from?  Quote the source and the date.

Why such a difference there and not the rest of the world?

Your spare player doesn't get new movies.  In other words, no support.  It was a waste of money.  People talk of savings with HD DVD, but spent how much extra money for movie titles (at up to $5 difference per title)?  Up to $500 extra for 100 movie titles.  That doesn't sound like savings to me.  Of course, I know some people won't except this truth.

Cheaper hardware, but more expensive to buy the software.  Some people didn't realize that most of the money is spent on the software...not the hardware.

That means 100 titles on Blu-ray and up to $750 for a Blu-ray player ($250 that would have been used to buy a HD DVD player + the extra $500 spent on the $100 HD DVD titles).  There will probably be some people that will say something like..."there aren't 100 titles I want on Blu-ray" (standard response).  As I have recently learned, some people you just can't help (no matter how hard you try).

HD DVD was just bad attempt as suckering people into a larger overall scheme (to keep Blu-ray from winning for about 4 to 5 years in order to pave the way for an early download appearance).  Thank goodness it failed.  Downloading quality 1080p video and lossless audio won't be viable for quite some time.

Anyway, it was cheaper to go Blu-ray from the beginning.  That was up to $1545 ($5 x 369 titles - $300 extra for a launch PS3) I saved by not going HD DVD.

It was never really about anything but wasting money on a technology that was going to die extremely early.  People changed that later on to your..."still very happy with it" type response once they were constantly on the losing end of the war.

Welcome aboard with Blu-ray.  You must be a movie lover.  I'm sure you will be happy with, now, receiving the highest quality video and audio available to consumers.  There is more to come.  3D capability should be here soon.

UHD is already here.  4320x7680 is the pixel count, or 16 times the resolution of HD.

Myself, I have the Sammy BD-UP5000.  I could care less what format the disc is in.  And since it has been recognized by a large portion of the AV community as the best blu ray player out there and the best hd-dvd player out there, im pretty happy with it.  oh and it has a reon chip for upconversion.  Myself, I laugh at anyone that took any "side" in the red/blue war because I have been (and will continue) enjoying both sides with 1 player :D

And how about this little calculation:

100 HD DVDs at 9€ equals a total of 900€ which you can use as coasters when your drives finally give out.  In the meantime, any new movies that come out, you will have a choice of standard DVD or buying a Blu Ray drive to watch and listen to True HD.

I'm having a hard time understanding how you figure you're coming out ahead.

But as long as you're happy, that's all that matters.

Well, as I previously stated: toshiba has to provide parts for years to come. I really doubt that there ever will be a time I can't get my player fixed. Also, what do you do when your Blu Ray Player dies? You just throw it away and don't have it repaired? So where exactly is the difference.

Oh and just fyi: I am listening to TrueHD with my HD-DVD Player too. (Same as I do with my Blu Ray Player)

When my Blu-ray player dies, I'll just buy another one at a local B&M store.  That's not so for HD DVD.  Plus, you "hope" Toshiba will continue to manufacture spare parts for HD DVD players.  I don't have to "hope" that Blu-ray players will be made years from now.  That's the difference.

You may listen to OLD titles in TrueHD on HD DVD, but not newly released titles in TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, or PCM.  But, you have a Blu-ray player, so no worries there.

I have more HD titles than BD at the moment. I am confortable taking that risk because:

(1) The Xbox HD (external USB) player can be had for $40, works like a charm and auto-configures under windows. I have one - hardly use it.
(2) LG, Lenovo, Addonics, HP and others are offering BD/HD drives as extermal or built-in drives. There will be spare parts for them for many years to come. I mostly use my LG drive now.
(3) At the point where I suspect that hardware will be an issue, I will just copy the discs to oher media. Typical size of HD movie is about 18-20GB. At today's prices (0.16 /GB), it would cost $3.20 to store the disc. 5 years from now, that will be 25 cents.
Thanks for your support.

Apparently, you are comfortable taking that risk.  Afterall, you did get in bed with HD DVD in the first place.  Not much else in that department would look like a risk to you (and others) at this point.  The manufactured excuses and defenses will never end for some people.

Your points use a lot of effort to get around things.  There are aways solutions to problems if you throw enough money and time at it.

So true. Points well taken. But keep in mind that so far, we are talking about a theoretical problem - there is no problem yet. I've only purchased two drives for a total of about $300. As for legacy media, I can still play all my original CDs, cassettes, Vinyl records, 1/4" tape (mostly), 8mm video (mostly), VHS tapes, diskettes, Zip disks, Magneto-optical (SCSI) disks. I have one Beta cassette that I have no way to play. Someday I'll get it copied. (Point here is that by the time I can't play my HD disks, I probably won't care).
Thanks for your support.

All those items you mentioned has sold a LOT more than HD DVD has (except maybe Zip disks).  I guess only time will time about the available methods for keeping HD DVD discs useful.

We'll. See. I have over 100 HD-DVD. Some of them are great movies that I watch on a regular basis. Also referring to another msg: I don't have to worry if Toshiba will continue to make parts for my HD-DVD Player. They have to. At least for 15 years or so. By that time they'll be replaced by what ever comes after Blu Ray's.

Let's put an end to this meaningless discussion. Let's just say, that some of us have HD-DVD Players. We like 'em and aren't gonna throw 'em away.

If you wanna make more fun at my expensive, here is some information: I bought my HD-DVD Player AFTER Warner announced that they'd stop making HD-DVD's. The format was already crumbling but there weren't any cheap HD-DVD's yet. Still, I would buy it again, if given the chance.
