If most of the names in your database are like that and you're happy with the parsing - what extra work would be created by moving to this system? All your names would be automatically converted into the format it sounds like you prefer. And if you have to create a person for your own profiles, you only have 2 fields to fill in, 1 less than currently.

This being the case why not just use CATVids, you can your one name field then?

Steve

Why would I want to do that? I like Profiler and want to continue using Profiler. I see this idea as a way of simplifying cast and crew name entry and stopping a lot of pointless arguments. It actually adds functionality to the program as it allows people to cater for asian names. And so far no one's been able to come up with any kind of down side.

So therefore going on the fact you prefer DVDP over Catvids, why are you trying to have catvids way of doing things implimented into your prefered choice of DVD cataloguing program?

As I have already stated before every DB I have ever come across (and was taught to do) has TWO name fields, as its bad DB design to use only one.

I'm not - in fact I don't think it was me that first suggested a single name field here in the forums. I just brought it here because I liked the idea and could see the advantages. And despite the fact you dislike the idea of having a single name field, you haven't listed what disadvantages it would bring.

I'm against a single name field. Instead I would rather have two name fields but I seriously doubt this will happen, so I will settle for the three fields we have at the moment.

One thing you say makes no sense.  My names wouldn't automatically be converted into the format I prefer -- because I prefer the 3 field format.

With the current system, if a person only uses 2 name fields I only have to fill 2 fields - and can skip over the middle name.  Actually, I don't even have to do that now since the middle name field comes after the last name in the entry screen.

Which post did you get a red arrow on? I haven't seen anything that wouldn't even vaguely warrant one.

Obviously a database designer who only uses one name field - shame on you!
However, balance has been restored.
