I'm sorry, but that makes little sense.

Where in the rules does it say a box set has to be called a "Box set".

I guess it is in the same place where it says a box that contains a single film with it's own upc is a box set.

Alien Quadrilogy Box Set? Nope.

Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition Box Set? Nope.

Neither of those have the "Box set" moniker in the title.

IMO, gift sets need their own section in the rules.

You are correct, but they were sold as multi-movie sets.  They were not sold as individual releases.

1. Because the outer box is just that, a box. It contains 1 or more titles with a different UPC code than the outer box. It contains some kind of trinket or gift, maybe a comic, statue, money clip or what-have-you.

Well, that 1 reason is all that is really needed to qualify this.

If the set contains 1 title, it does not qualify as a box set under the current rules.  Now that I think about it, the LotR example doesn't even qualify as a ""Bonus Feature Film" set.  The rule says:

"Do not confuse "Bonus Feature Films" with "Any video documentary material regarding the film, or those associated with it."

As I recall, this was in direct response to the 'From Dusk Till Dawn' set (717951005786), which included the "Full-Length Feature 'Full-Tilt Boogie'."  Some people wanted to turn it into a box set using the same reasoning that Leiterfluid used earlier.  Well, now we have a definition of what is and isn't considered a film.

There are toio many gift sets out there to not justify having rules for them:

We have rules for them.  They are single release sets, so we profile them as single release sets.  You may not like it, but that is how the rules read.

On a personal level, I don't do it that way.  I prefer the empty profile as well, but that is my personal preference and I will keep that where it belongs.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

This discussion shows exactly the reason why the bonus profile (aka Ben-Hur setup) has been established in the rules. It is a reasonable starting point for both camps, the box set camp and the single profile camp.

I'd go with box set, but I think listing cast and crew on the main profile and otherwise treating it as a boxset is a reasonable compromise.
