| Posted: | | | | Going by the end credits is the only accurate way to do it. There is a couple reasons we do not go with imdb... one being accuracy... another one being they (imdb) own their database and do not allow other sites/companies use their info... and doing so opens Invelos up to lawsuits. That is the main reason Ken wants credits from the actual end credits only. | | | Pete |

EDIT: Got my last positive for today | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

| Posted: | | | | That's all well and good, except that the look-up tool is based on what is currently in the Invelos database, much of which was taken directly from IMDb where they ALWAYS drop the comma.
Just because the Invelos db shows no comma as the most common occurrence does not mean that is the way they were actually most commonly credited in the films they were in.
And therein, lies the rub. The bad data perpetuates itself! | | | Hal |

And therein, lies the rub. The bad data perpetuates itself! That's exactly the case. And as Tim points out, you can submit an as-credited name and get a 'no' vote for not setting up a common name to match the IMDb-formatted-comma-less variant (which is as he says always the most frequent in the Invelos lookup). Realizing that I can't fix them all and resolving to only fix these once, I'm keeping mine local. | | | ...James

| Posted: | | | | In this case why are we assuming IMDB is wrong especially with the evidence in the first post and all come to the conclusion to have no comma, change the database appropriatly and then the lookup tool will be accurate.
I personally dont agree the IMDB is wrong, its there for a reason. Thats not to say thats the only referance I use I take into consideration IMDB, the credit lookup and I also fallow up with any other source I can find. Sometimes I contribute and sometimes I dont becouse of things said in these forums.
If all fails I lock the profile for myself! |

We are not 'assuming' that IMDb is wrong. Many of us have compared the end credits to IMDb credits, and they are often wrong. Not only that, they seed their data with 'phantom' credits so they know when their data is being 'stolen'. I have found several of these. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. | Posted: | | | | ok I can agree with that, Im not talking about a full audit, but if I find a questionable credit, use the credit lookup and IMDB and any others and decide credit lookup tool is not accurate and my only other source is IMDB, I should be able to use that for a source. |

First off we all know that IMDb is rife with errors throughout. So to use them as a sole reference source is simply ludicrous. Secondly, in reference to your subject, their data means NOTHING they have made a STYLISTIC decision, for whatever reason to list aAl suffixes as Robert Downey Jr. We have made a similar STYLISTIC choice to list them as Robert Downey, Jr. so there can be NO possible problems in this regard. As I hinted at in my previous post, this was settled loooooong ago.

| Posted: | | | | I don't know who this 'we' is you are talking about but I do not use 'stylistic choices'. I enter them 'as credited' and 'as credited' only. If it is 'Robert Downey Jr', that is how I enter it. If it happens to be 'Robert Downey, Jr', then that is how I enter it. To do it any other way would be against the rules. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. You are being argumentative. You know as well as i do we have had sveral discussiuons including as I recall one poll whicjh have sttled this along with mosat of these other recent discussions that have come up of late, if people would check into it. But no, we have to cover the same territory every few months. Ye, enry a stylistic choice was made looong ago. Look around. I presume also, unicus, that this references the Alias name situation, if you are talking about whatever is On Screen...you know my answer.

I am glad to hear that, but couldn't find a reference (apart from polls, but that's not "official stuff"). Skip I am honestly amazed. You now claim we DO have such a standard (always use a comma) while you yourself undermined this only a few weeks ago with your contribution to 'The Super' - which we argued about in these forums for several pages. You stated repeatedly that we have no standards at all, and that we should use the most-credited form every time. IMHO, that discussion is one of the main reasons for this whole disaster (the only way we have to research the most-credited form is the lookup tool, and it will declare the IMDb-formatted-comma-less variant as winner every time, not because of actual credits, but just based on IMDb's "stylistic choice"). We had a long-standing consensus on how to enter suffixes, but you came in and tore it down. Either we indeed have a "stylistic choice" of always using a comma before Jr./Sr. suffixes - and I feel we badly need it - or we don't. I now see you posting that we actually DO have that standard, while I see you as one of the primary users who actually destroyed that long-standing consensus. I'm truly puzzled... For the record: the most recent poll showing what the users wanted is right here. | | | Last edited: by T!M |

| Posted: | | | | That is simply because you don't understand what I say half the time, Tim. We have had a consensus on this for a VERY long time and it was one established long before even that poll. Now does that mean i am departing from AS CREDITED absolutely NOT. That is the foundation of the entire Cast Crew part of the Program, and if that is not correct, then we will never be able to make the Alias system as Ken designed work properly. You don't want to know my view of you of you, Tim, I am too much a gentleman to state it. That does mean that i don't like you or i am mad at you, both of which would be untrue.
I have said many time sif you don't understand me I will try and try and try to make it clear, but you generally would prefer to argue.
And BTW that consensus was designed expressly to make a different stylistic choice from IMDb, so that there could no questions about that particular piece of data.
