Quote: The rule reads: "Enter the year of the original theatrical release." Film Festival showings are not the same as theatrical releases. So, we leave the field empty for films which have not (yet) been released theatrically.
Blank for TV series as well! (strictly by the Rules) Wrong Hal... it is clarified in the TV Series section to used first aired. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting GSyren: Quote: In my opinions, two mistakes were made in the current design / rule:
1) A field called "Production year" was introduced, and it was desired to find an unquestionable date to use. Unfortunately, no such date seems to exist. Definition of the actual production year is highly subjective. Personally I would say that it is the year that first unit filming starts. But that's not only a personal choice, but also not very easily documented.
2) It was decided to use the theatrical release date for this field without renaming the field. This just adds to the confusion.
Now, theatrical release date is often a good indication as to when the film was produced, but certainly far from always. My favorite example is Mario Bava's "Rabid Dogs" (Cani arrabbiati) which was theatrically released some 15 years after it was made.
I would really like "Production Year" to actually indicate when the film was made rather than when it was released, but as long as the rules are what they are I guess we're stuck with theatrical release. And as long as we are, I believe that general release date is the better choice. I completely agree with you...another example is 'On The Silver Globe' (Na srebrnym globie)...made in 1977 and not released until 1987 or so. The way the field is now it should really be called 'Release Date' or 'Theatrical Release' or something similar. Production year needs to reflect when the majority of the film was made and a theatre release has little to do with it. |

That would be absolutely correct for "production year." However, it's in violation of the rules, so don't contribute profiles this way.
I wish this issue would be corrected. Simply change the label "production year" to "originally released". and a bit of Triva for Kubricks's Dr. Stranglove : "Some references show the date of this film as 1963. Its world premiere was scheduled for December 12, 1963, but following John F. Kennedy's assassination on November 22,1963 it was felt to be inappropriate to release such a film so soon afterwards, so it was not shown until January 1964." So Release year it should be .. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.
