I was doing what you were doing for effect, my friend. Sorry it went over your head. And yes, the Zoom credit is per rules. Common name "credited as" the end credits. Per rules, exactly. And yes, I know we disagree on the common name. I think we all know your stand on this by now. | | | Build a man a fire and you keep him warm for a day. | Posted: | | | | I did a little research: Goal is to find the most actually credited appearances of T(h)om(as F.) Wilson in DVD Profiler profiles for choosing a common name.
Starting basis: The DVD Profiler data is contaminated with IMDb Data. If in IMDb a actor is listed with a credited as name it is generally correct. If in DVD Profiler a actor is listed with a name different to IMDb's common name it is likely the name as he is actually credited in the credits.
Result of the research: Film Title - Credit Lookup Tom - Credit Lookup Thomas F. - as credit entry in IMDb - Supposed name as credited in films credit Action Jackson - 0 - 6 - no - Thomas F. Andersonville - 1 - 1- yes - Tom April Fool's Day - 0 - 13 - no - Thomas F. Atlantis: Milo's Return - 10 - 3 - yes - Tom Back to the Future (incl. Trilogy entrys) - 0 - 73 - no - Thomas F. Back to the Futere II - 0 - 46 - no - Thomas F. Back to the Futere III - 0 - 46 - no - Thomas F. Batman: Animated Series - 1 - 1 - yes - Tom Born to be Wild - 0 - 1 - yes - ? Bound by Honor - 2 - 9 - yes - Tom Camp Nowhere - 0 - 2 - yes - ? Freaks and Geeks - 2 - 0 - yes - Tom Gargoyles - 4 - 0 - yes - Tom Girl - 1 - 1 - yes - Tom Knight Rider - 0 - 4 - no - Thomas F. Larry the Cable Guy - 2 - 0 - yes - Tom Lois and Clark - 1 - 3 - yes - Tom Mr. Write - 1 - 0 - yes - Tom Sabrina - 3 - 0 - yes - Tom Spongebob Movie - 2 - 16 - yes - Tom Spongebob Series - 2 - 4 - yes - Tom Stripperella - 0 - 1 - yes - ? Superman: Animated Series - 5 - 2 - yes - Tom That Darn Cat - 5 - 6 - yes - Tom Titus - 1 - 0 - yes - Tom Two and a Half Man - 2 - 0 - yes - Tom Zoom 6 - 2 - yes - Tom
Conclusion: Thomas F. Wilson - 6 Titles Tom Wilson - 18 Titles ? but probably Tom Wilson - 3

| Posted: | | | | Nice work Speedy, do you know how these numbers work when you count profiles? I'm asking because I think it's slightly unfair to count titles when there will be many more BTTF profiles in the database than any of the other titles, and I think it's fairer to take that into account. |

To me, it's about the fact that there's a need to distinguish between various actors named Tom Wilson. We can do that using birth years, which I tend to use only as a last resort, but in this particular case we have a perfectly legitimate way to single out this particular one: we can use his full name, Thomas F. Wilson. Not only is that a very easy way to distinguish him from other actors named Tom Wilson, but as he's credited under that name in a number of high-profile movies, chances are that the average user will have more Thomas F. Wilson credits in his local database than Tom Wilson credits. Looking at my own collection, I have him credited as Thomas F. Wilson seven times (although I happen two have two versions of the BTTF-trilogy), and just one Tom Wilson credit (guest appearance in a more recent TV-show). I expect the situation to be quite similar for a lot of users - knowing that the 'Back to the Future'-trilogy sold very well, lots and lots of users will have at least three Thomas F. Wilson credits in their local database. Additionally, they may well have one or a few Tom Wilson credits, but my guess is that for the majority of users, the credit of Thomas F. Wilson simply has the highest count. |

Assuming that all profiles are allocated to the supposed credited name including the ? to Tom Wilson it would look like this: Thomas F. Wilson 188 Profiles (165 profiles alone for Back to the Future) Tom Wilson 103 Profiles mfg Speedy |
