Why do you want to be Mr. Nice Guy when somebody is suggesting doing something that is potentially illegal?  Whether you agree with it or not isn't the point.  Since it IS illegal in many areas, if not most, condoning it here by helping him exposes Ken and Invelos to potential harm.  Never mind the fact that Profiler is for cataloging DVDs, not movies stored on a hard drive.

What he is suggesting is not illegal everywhere. And providing something that might have a use that might be illegal somewhere doesn't mean that the thing itself is illegal. Criminals drive on roads and use cars. Are you suggesting that cars and roads should be banned since they have potentially illegal uses?

More to the point, automatic and semi-automatic weapons are illegal in Australia is most situations (thank god). Are you suggesting they should be banned in the US because of that? DVDProfiler is not constrained to some specific geo-political area, and I would hate to see constraints put on it because of  poor laws passed in some other country.

Because if it is potentially illegal, it is per definition also potentially legal. Unless I have very clear indication of the opposite I avoid assuming people are breaking the law (and hence try to avoid breaking the lay myself by wrongfully accusing people of criminal behaviour). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slander_and_libel for details and then investigate the exact rules as they apply in your jurisdiction.

Which might indeed be a valid reason for Ken not to include the feature - no one has said it isn't. We are requesting a feature to support a 100% legal use in the jurisdiction we are located in. If this gives Ken legal problems he should of course not implement it. That is his call, and if in doubt he will hopefully seek legal advise. He could also choose to only enable the feature in certain jurisdictions (this lowers the benefit and increase the development cost on the feature which will make it less likely to be implemented, but it does not change the fact that it is a valid request).

I will now give you a complete list of who desides what DVD Profiler is designed for:
Ken (well, actually most likely Gerri, but let's at least allow Ken the illusion he has anything to say)

No, I am not on the list. You are not on the list. We can both make our requests (for adding features or leaving them out) but that is it. Blu-ray and HD DVD have been added since the release of the program. Which is obvious - any program needs to move with the demand. If for example DVD Profiler had started out years earlier as VHS Profiler, a failure to move to support DVD would have ment the certain death of the product. Obvious format changes can and will happen in the future as well. If online storage if your own DVDs are one of these changes is up to Ken to deside, not you or me.

Lars

That's the way I would do it.

Leaving all the legal discussions out of this thread, I now have a majority of MY (owned) movie library on a NAS device. I have yet to catalog quite a few of them. As I look at DVD Profiler to adding movies there isn't a way (as far as I can tell) to identify movies that are not on a DVD, Blue Ray or HD-DVD disc.

I would like to be able to identify movies on a hard drive as such. Have I overlooked a feature like that? If it doesn't exist, I would like to request that when adding a movie I can identify a media type as 'storage' or better yet, let the user define a media type other than the 3 provided.

Regards,
David
I guess none of you has noticed that the LoadDVD plugin does exactly what this user is looking for. There are people playing DVD's (ISO, IFO), mp3's and movie traliers from the hard drive all catalogued by DVD Profiler. If Ken has any issues with this, so far he has not said so. And of course if he does say so, I will promptly disable that feature. The original purpose of LoadDVD was to support media changers such as the Sony VGPXL1B1/2/3 series that will hold 200 DVDs . Other units supported are Dacal/Ziotek media carousels, holding 150 discs each, and coming in the future is support for Sony CX995V which holds 400 DVDs.
Thanks for your support.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your plugin as it is third-party developed software not associated with Invelos.

Well, you can already do that with the Notes field in HTML mode and XML data islands inside it.

This is actually nice, but I'd like to see custom text fields which I could use to filter (possible with notes) and sort (not possible with notes) my collection. And of course those fields should be available in reports.

And what better evidence than here. Unbox video - legitimate, legal download of DVD PC files from Amazon.com.The world is changing rapidly. Plugins are a way for DVDPro to keep up with these trends while customer demands, market forces and legal issues are being resolved. When the time is right, you can bet this function will be added to the base product in order to remain competitive.

I just lost about 30 minutes of typing, so I'll vent via summary:

1. Skip is a butt, don't let him get to you steiny.
2. Copying DVDs to you HD is _not_ illegal (format shifting is generally considered by courts to be fair use, and fair use is specifically exempted from the DMCA)
3. It _is_ illegal to _help_ someone else decrypt data in the US, which is why the decrypter I use is sold in Antigua
4. It _is illegal_ to redistribute copyrighted graphic works, which is what the DVDp datatbase does, but there doesn't seem to be a problem with that here. And don't give me the "personal use" argument - it's one of the defining features of DVDp, and Invelos makes money because the program is so good.
5. Don't hold your breath on any advances...we've all gone blue waiting for things. Buy it for what it is, and know it's still the best out there for what it does.
6. For less than a basic Kaleidescope, Skip could put his entire 30TB on a two-fault-tolerant raid server with a top-end quad core machine that could do multiple simultaneous streams.

I came here looking for a "press to launch from HD" function, and it looks like there's a plugin. I hate plugins, but in this case I'll be happy to try it out. Thanks to mediadogg for offering it up - I'll give it a shot; if it works for me, you'll definitely get a thank you.

What exactly is it your after?  To launch DVD-Video (vob files etc) from your HDD via clicking something in profiler?  If it is I may be able to help.  I use a similar method for launching trailers, it involves renaming the file to be launched to the collection number it has in profiler.  Then you just click a link in a html window and that launches the film.  Let me know and I'll dig up the code for it.

Ha! You mean I wrote that plugin fer nothin'?  Actually, it the mark of a really good and useful program - DVDProfiler has so much capability that there are usually at least two ways to do just about anything!

As far as HDD storage of films being "impractical", I have my entire collection online.  Hard drive space is less than $.25/GB these days, which means that a dual-layer DVD costs an extra $4 to store online.  So if you're paying $20 for a DVD, you can have an online copy for 20% more.

As for the original poster's question, I used to have a separate file to maintain that mapping, now I use a plugin and keep it in the notes field.

Along the lines of storing a DVD on a hard drive, is there a DVD player that will allow you to specify a title to start playing at?  For example, skip the main menu, preview, and everything else and jump right to the actual movie.

If I can get something that'll do that, I'll dump all my single-movies and store DVD's as I originally did.  I went to single-files for the movies because when I start a movie, I want to start a movie and not watch all the DVD ads.
