why not create a FAQ and put the results of all these polls and the ensuing discussions into a file they can find and read?  Make it easy on everybody - or is that too much to ask?

A FAQ would be most helpful. I see a lot of rehashing here (not only by us newbs, by the way).
Problem is, who decides what the "right" answers are?

On second thought, the answers don't need to be "right"!
It would be an "unofficial FAQ" to sum up what Forum users said in polls and discussions, if there was a consensus on some topics, and so on.
It would not necessarily express the point of view of Invelos (unless Ken says so), nor the opinions of all DVDP users, who are many more than the Forum users, AFAIU.

Faq's presume that users will go find and read them first, after all FAQs are Frequently Asked Questions and we have a FAQ section but does it prevent users from asking those questions ANYWAY. Ok, call me a wiseguy.

If you think about it, the forums are a FAQ.  Or is that QAF?

Regardless, I side with the party who believes that users can ask questions over and over every few months.  Just like A_S's Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD topic, I simply choose to ignore that thread.

I also say that if you want to stop a new thread on an old topic, point the OP to the older thread.

Meanwhile, somebody pass me the popcorn!

In addition to EntryWiki's suggestion I'd add a "Display Title" which is local and non-contributable.

When adding a profile, DT is filled from "DVD Title" but can changed to the users wishes.

Why not lock the title?

Locking the title currently also means locking the original title. A DT yould be used without the impact of having locked all title fields.

Maybe I'm thick, or I'm just not using the program the same way you are, but how does locking the title change anything, even in regards to locking the original title?

You can still accept a change, without having to unlock. There's a nice little feature that allows partial acceptation of updates, and that supercedes the locks.. ??

Am I missing something ??

I think you are correct in the assumption that we don't use the program in the same way.

I only care about very few things in the program, which are title, cover, important actors.

Since I have my very own way of how I want my titles formatted, every title is locked in my DB. And when it comes to updates from the online DB I just accept them all without even checking it.

But even if I would check them and decide that this "original title" update is something that I want it would also overwrite the title and edition field and I would have to correct them (according to my title standards) afterwards.

This was a mjor problem back in the "old" days. Of course handling updates was bit more difficult back then, but users would accidentally get their data overwritten frequently. Hence the locks, you have to actively decide to accept whatever data you are thinking of.

That's the thing. I never let anything from the online overwrite my data without looking. I actually refuse most of it

Yep. The partial update was a revolution. I never used locks much before, and since partial accept was introduced, I've been using them even less!

Same here. I'd like "Preview Changes" to be the default behavior, unless you decide (as an option) that you don't want the default Preview.

I don't understand you - in one sentence you say you lock all your titles and in another you say you need a new title because you don't want to lock the title?

I lock every title because I want them to be displayed in a fashion that suits me.

If there were to be a local uncontributable Display Title (like the Sort Title) I could unlock all my titles and thus getting updates because "my title" would be in the DT field an be protected from updates.

A voice of sanity, Karsten. Are you trying to convince Nurse Ratched that you can be released.
