How we handle the Slip Case type?

The slip case may indeed be what we see "in store" or on our shelves, but I personally (and I am definitely not alone on this) also find it useful to differentiate between the inner casing, e.g. between keepcase and digipack.

I know that many Dutch DVD collectors (www.dvd.nl) who value digipacks higher than keepcases (from a collector's point of view). When I look at my personal collection, I have plenty of digipacks, but only one doesn't have a slip case (Starship Troopers SCE region 1). I would still like to be able to track down information on the inner case for those digipacks that DO have a slip case (surely more than 50 in my collection).

For me, ideally, I would like to see our standard drop-down box for case type, with an optional tick box for outer case, the slip case (or even a sleeve/steel case, but that besides the point of the arguement here). For example, DVD Profiler could then show a digipack with "slip case" ticked as "digipack in slip case". I'd find that much more useful than just "slip case".

Just to be clear - I am talking about single movie sets here.

It's awfully presumptuous of you to guess at what I have and have not been pushing for. Especially when you haven't been keeping up with the request threads on this topic.

Again, read what I actually wrote.  I didn't presume to know what you are pushing for.  I simpy stated what I thought, based on your stated logic, you should be pushing for.  I thought it was pretty clear, but I will try and make it clearer next time.

Looks presumptuous to me.

As I said, I have yet to see a digipack that wasn't contained in something.  From what I am hearing from others, they seem to be of the same opinion.

That opinion would be wrong.

How many of you have "The Marx Brothers: Silver Screen Collection" 025192125027 or
"Notting Hill" 025192127724 or
"American Pie" 025192145520 ?

There are plenty of others.

I don't own these so I have to look at the profiles...

I couldn't tell from the Marx Brothers scans, but 'Notting Hill' and 'American Pie' sure look like they are inside a plastic sleeve.

Edit:  I found another image of 'Notting Hill' that makes it look like it is, indeed, a stand alone digipack.

Ken has answered this in the new thread!

The slip case cover type is intended to be used when it is the only case for the profile, as in for a box set.  If there is only one inner case, use the inner case type.

You two are a piece of work.

Sorry Ken went with the majority (again). Thankfully he does that (sometimes)

Does the rule need some tweaking to get it to work right? Yes. Is it impossible? No.

Ken's program. Ken's decision. Just like the acceptance of the Mister Roberts... oops I mean "Mister Roberts" profile. Those of us who did not agree simply said we don't agree but we will abide by it until the rule is changed. Try it sometime.

Most all are looking forward to the end of the Box Set case type question confusion. With a sentence or two the whole thing can be clarified quite nicely in the rules.

Stand back and laugh if you like, or suggest some wording you think might help resolve the issue. Your call.

Or you can take "your image" from James and go home pouting.

Skip, Dan, stop being childish. It's already clear you guys don't like the current outcome. However, you got plenty opportunity in several threads to convince everyone that your interpretations made most sense. Yet, you didn't manage (see poll results, all three of them).
But at least Dan did some effort (referring to what you see on the shelves etc...), but Skip your posts are usually nothing but 'read the rules, they are clear to me, so you must be stupid' posts.

Going with the majority instead of the data and data structure will ultimately wind up breaking the ptogram AND the database. I have always listened toi my users when designing any database, but that doesn't mean that what they THINK is correct, is indeed correct. Follow the data and database design principles; I know from long and hard experience any other path leads utlimately to....disaster.

Then, as you are so quick to tell others, go design you own program. This one belongs to Invelos.

You guys have been sniping at me for 3 days and I'm childish? That's rich!

If you want to reword it, do so. You won't get any help from me on this one.

Oh, and, Rick, if I were going to take my images and go home pouting, I wouldn't tell anyone about it. It would just be done.

TW, Rick I see your post is AS USUAL filled with snide and unecessary remarks.  You simply cannot help yourself and that is to bad, it makes it impossible to have a rational discussion...with someone so totally irrational.  That is truly TOO bad. Dan is right about the 3 days of sniping, you people have a real problem with anyone who TRIES to help, damn shame.

not sure who "You People" are but I have made one comment pre Ken's post and that was this morning, addressing Rifter's incorrect assessment of what was happening. Please get you generalizations correct if you're going to use them.

For the record I'm all for rational discussions. In fact there is another forum I've been frequenting where they happen all the time. They just don't happen here much at all. I do agree it is difficult to have one with someone who is not rational though. Makes you wonder why I can have them elsewhere but not in a thread where you're involved.

Let's see what happened the last few days.
Someone was confused about the boxset Casetype rules, again... which clearly indicated that the rules are not clear at all.
So I posted 2 polls to check what the majority THOUGHT had to be profiled. The results even surprised me with a large majority NOT acting according to the current rules.
Then I had to ask repeatedly to have these rules clarified since the majority applies them wrongly.
Now in the clarification, it become apparent that the Slipcase case (pun not intended) even had to be used for single movies, which surprised an even larger majority, resulting in yet another poll. You gave a valid argument why you think it should be like that, but apparently most people think it has more disadvantages than advantages.
Then Ken came along stating that Slipcases should not be used in single-movie profiles (I'm not sure yet he also agrees on that for the multi-disk-cases where my original poll was about).
Apparently, you and Skip don't like that. Fair enough, but your reactions now are plain childish (e.g. your reaction to the poll poster using your image... Gee).

And Skip, I think you can assume that there are more IT people wandering around here who have experience with data modelling. And most are experienced enough to realize it is never possible to have a model that fits all possible cases. Again, in the discussions I have seen enough arguments that go against your opinion why it should be Slipcases all over. And saying that this new decision will now break the database is just plain ridiculous. BTW, if you are so keen on having neat models, why don't you bash Ken for the database not distinguishing movies from DVDs resulting in tons of duplicate data ?! From a data modelling viewpoint this is a much bigger problem. But Ken already pointed out that the database is kept simple to not require advanced DBMS.
