| Posted: | | | | I think the original list of ten years ago is more representative of the actual top 100 based on the voting criteria. I think people overall are less educated today about film as an art form, and movie making in general. If you look through the list, you'll find that most of the movies that people name as having had a big influence on them as kids and on life in America in general are from the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Those are the films, like "Citizen Kane", that set the standards we unconsciously use today to evaluate whether a movie is good or bad.
The 60's, however, was a decade that flushed a lot of the old notions about America, American life, and nearly everything else, right down the crapper. Movie making in general went into the dumper then as well. That's why the really good movies from that period that made the list are such standouts for their time.
I don't think we'll ever again see a golden age the likes of which gave us "Citizen Kane," "Gone With the Wind," "High Noon," etc. That makes all those movies made from 1930 to 1965 so precious, and we should all study them and do whatever is necessary to preserve them for future generations. | | | John

Exactly. Say what you want to about the romantic storyline. Almost anything would've worked in either version. The 97 version is the first one of all the Titanic movies that accurately shows how the ship sank, as proven by Robert Ballard in his dives on the actual wreck and analysis of the wreckage. But the thing that sets both apart and why they are on the list is the stark terror of knowing you're going to die, and still fighting to the very end to stay alive. Whether you're watching Clifton Webb or Leonardo it's the stuff of superb movie-making. I personally prefer 1958's A Night to Remember. Titanic's sinking may have been most accurate in the 97 version, but they missed out the other ship entirely, which I think was an important side to the story of the disaster. I'm not saying it should be in the list though, it is British after all! | | | Jon "When Mister Safety Catch Is Not On, Mister Crossbow Is Not Your Friend."

I was wondering about the differences - that's why I wanted to compare the 2 lists. Thanks for doing the work for me! |

| Posted: | | | | I agree with the list for the most part, hard to argue against any of these films. The thing that I find interesting is how some movies moved so far up or down in the poll from 10 years ago!!!
Raging Bull was 24th in the poll 10 years ago and it moved up 20 spots to #4???
Vertigo was 61 in the first poll and moved up 52 spots to the #9 spot???
The Searchers was #96 back in 1997 and now it is #12 in 2007, a change by 84 spots???
Does that mean that these movies have more of a social impact today then they did 10 years ago??? I mean why did The African Queen drop from #17 all the way down to #65, 48 spots lower???
While I like the list, I would love to know more about how these people made such swooping changes, I mean I can understand a newer movie (within the last 10 years perhaps) impacting the list from 10 years ago, but hows does an old John Wayne western like The Searchers (a movie I love by the way) manage to move so far up the list 10 years later???
For the record I only own 28 of these top 100 films, something I intend to rectify. However I will admit, despite my 38 years of watching movies, I have never watched 37 of these films and out of those 37 I have never heard of The General, The Best Years of Our Lives, Nashville, and Sunrise (Though it is possible I may have seen them, just don't recognize the titles). | | | My Collection!!! |

I think the reason why The Searchers moved so far up the list is because of the unbelievable Video Transfer it received last year., That.. I believe really spurned on interest and sales. African Queen most likely dropped as it did as there is still no DVD available ( legally) on the market., (Actually it is the only hold out at the point in time.) Vertigo is an underrated classic and Supreme Hitchcock film., It deserves the jump it got. Don't know about Raging Bull though,, maybe 'cause Scorsese finally got his Oscar this past year when he should have got one for Raging Bull for 1980. I've finished analysing my own library and found I have 71 movies owned,, and 15 on my wish list, which is where I discovered that Bogart's' Queen is N/A .. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. The story I've always heard is that Hearst was still powerful then and at that time it was too close to home to be well received. I think it didn't come to be as highly regarded until it blasted to the top of the Sight & Sound poll back in 1962. It was absent from their list in 1952. Theirs is a good list to check out for great films from any country, not just the US. Quoting Calidain: Quote: I agree with the list for the most part, hard to argue against any of these films. All of the films that you mention that went up have received good DVD releases that have helped put them out more than they were 10 years ago. The African Queen has been out of the picture, so to speak, in R1. Quote:

I have 85 on the new list I would have more but some don't have a Region 4 release yet. I have 18 on the list of the 22 removed and 14 of those added. Personally I would rate almost all of the films on the removed list ahead of those added. I really don't understand Swing Time, Sophie's Choice, Do the Right Thing and The Sixth Sense being added ahead of films like The Third Man, Mutiny on the Bounty, Amadeus etc. |

| Posted: | | | | Stone the crows! I only own a mediocre 22 of the new list & 23 of the old one.... Guess it's time to go on an Amazon shopping spree, but then again, bah, they are not including any Cronenberg or Lynch there. And crucify me, but I like Titanic too... | | | Funny, these cookies don't taste anything like Girl Scouts.

| Posted: | | | | I have more than 60 of these films on DVD. More than half of those that I do not own, I do not own for one specific reason. It is not that they aren't fine films, most of which I've enjoyed seeing in movie theaters and on TV. It's because they are basically dramatic, depressing movies, with a world view of dispair and hopelessness. And while I share much of those depressing feelings, I do not care to relive it in rewatching these painful films. Once was enough for me.
And there are a few I just don't like.
A few others, I'll probably buy at some time in the future. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

| Posted: | | | | While I think Citizen Kane is a brilliant film and deserves a top spot, I much prefer Casablanca.
As for Titanic, there were other, much better films from that yeat that list before Titanic. Especially L.A. Confidential and the Full Monty. I'm not syaing the Full Monty should be on the list, just that it was a better film than Titanic. |
