| Posted: | | | | I personally feel if it is in the genre field it should be seen as a genre for profiler's purposes. But when it comes down to it...
Family: I can see Family as a genre. Films and TV Series that is made to be enjoyed by the entire family... from toddler on up... no matter the age. Don't really want to see it removed from the program personally.
Classic: I personally don't see it as a genre. But as long as it is listed in the genres I will treat it as such. Don't mean I will necessarily use it locally and if Ken seen fit to remove it I wouldn't complain.
Television: Definitely not a Genre. First to admit that. But it does serve a good purpose in Profiler. I would NOT want to see it removed without us first getting a new filterable field to take it's place. | | | Pete |

But its highly subjective, for some this may apply to "Friday 13th" others may feel a distinct urge to throw up when having to watch "Cinderella". So how exactly do you define a movie that is not "made to be enjoyed by the entire family", and wouldn't it be easier to put those under "Special Interest"? | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! | Posted: | | | | I have always found every genre to be the exact same way.
Some can find the film M*A*S*H the funniest thing they ever seen... while others see nothing funny about it.
Genre as a whole is a very subjective thing. | | | Pete |

Which is why the rules tell us NOT to make contributions that do nothing but change this field unless they are blatantly incorrect. Whether or not we believe 'Classic' is a genre is besides the point. If it is already in a profile, and it can apply to the title in question, there is no reason to change it. I've never understood the desire to make these kinds of changes. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. But this is already very much implied by the rating if it is OK for everybody -- or everybody from 6 onward or so. Classic: <grin> for me it refers to Roman or Greek culture, some 2 milennia ago. Films weren't invented then, so it is pointless. </grin> It is also very much duplicated as you can give the movies you like to be classic a full marks review status. Television: has dual purpose. IMHO it first can mark series, second it can mark low budget movies that ended up on the small screen only and third, it is the producer's intent during creation. That said, the first is obvious from the profile and the second is rather subjective. The third: intention isn't always what it becomes But, Pete, you say it does serve a good purpose. What exactly are *you* thinking if? Otherwise, only a minefield of subjectivity is created for the new filter... | | | Eric

I personally want to see a new field for this. Original release type field. Maybe options such as...
- Theatrical - Television - Direct to Video - Internet (series and such originally airing on sites such as Netflix) | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | Don't care much for genres. I set them, lock them and usually forget about them.
But I do use Television for my local. I know the same thing can be accomplished by tags but so can almost anything. I find it useful however as a quick and convenient way to filter TV titles. I do like the TV tag to let me know what movies were made for TV or not (sometimes you can't tell). Classic is way to subjective, but TV is based on fact, not opinion. I don't do family so that doesn't concern me much, but might in the future. I suppose family could be re-titled "child friendly" or something, and does serve purpose even if not for me. Classic should probably be a custom genre, like anthology is in my local. |

- Theatrical - Television - Direct to Video - Internet (series and such originally airing on sites such as Netflix) Which IMO means 'Television' can be dropped from the genres and a new field could possibly be called "First publication medium", "First publication on" or something alike. For conversion purposes, anything marked as 'televion' could be transferred as such, anything else as 'theatrical'. It leaves the other options for a contribution frenzy on corrections, but I suspect it'll be a minority of profiles. Anyway, the way this thread turns out, a move of the thread to 'desktop feature requests' would be appropriate. Ken, are you still alive ? | | | Eric
