| Posted: | | | | Very good suggestions, folks, much appreciated. I have a ton of stuff to try out now. Will definitely try them out to see what gives the best results. Simply having a book on top of the lid did not work, as there wasn't enough pressure. Hopefully my scanner can handle an open lid, because I don't think I can apply enough pressure with the lid closed.
Btw, are there any backdraws in doing what bbbbb suggested? Apart from the time required straightening the cover out. Could the slip be damaged in any way when trying to put it back into the cover?
If you GIMP users don't mind me asking, how do you align the cover while rotating? I tried making a rectangle and the rotate, but I ended up rotating the rectangle instead of the cover image. | | | TV set: SONY KDL-52NX800 BD/DVD-player: LG BH8220BN 5.1 Collection: 801+ | | | Last edited: by keung |

I also use GIMP because I'm a Linux user, but Paint.NET is definitely more user friendly than GIMP and will achieve the same results.
Stuart I downloaded and gave it a try, it was much slower than GIMP and I didn't find it that much more user friendly. I also thought the auto level adjustments gave it more of a saturated look than GIMP, found GIMPS white balance adjustment to come closer to matching the actual cover. | | | HDTV: 52" Toshiba Regza 52XV545U AVR: Onkyo TR-707 Speakers: Paradigm Monitor 7 v6, CC-190 & Atom Monitors Subwoofer: Definitive Technology ProSub 800 BD/DVD: Oppo BDP-93 (Region Free) HD PVR: Motorola DXC3400 500GB w/ 1TB Expander BD/DVD/Game: 250GB PS3 Slim DVD/Game: 250GB XBox 360 Elite Special Edition (Black) Game: Wii Remote: Logitech Harmony One w/ PS3 Adapter WHS: Acer H341 Windows Home Server |

Here is the process I use. Image --> Transform --> Then you have several rotate options. The problem was aligning it when the scan was off by a few degrees. That's when I had problems while using GIMP. With Mithi's grid solution, however, I had a much easier time rotating the cover Very easy to see when the cover is properly lined up | | | TV set: SONY KDL-52NX800 BD/DVD-player: LG BH8220BN 5.1 Collection: 801+ |

| Posted: | | | | Ahh, OK. Seems that he had a better idea of what you were asking than I did... When I goto crop the top edge I can estimate the amount of rotation needed, if any. When I scan I line up the side edge and leave space for the top or bottom in case I need to rotate it a bit. | | | HDTV: 52" Toshiba Regza 52XV545U AVR: Onkyo TR-707 Speakers: Paradigm Monitor 7 v6, CC-190 & Atom Monitors Subwoofer: Definitive Technology ProSub 800 BD/DVD: Oppo BDP-93 (Region Free) HD PVR: Motorola DXC3400 500GB w/ 1TB Expander BD/DVD/Game: 250GB PS3 Slim DVD/Game: 250GB XBox 360 Elite Special Edition (Black) Game: Wii Remote: Logitech Harmony One w/ PS3 Adapter WHS: Acer H341 Windows Home Server |

| Posted: | | | | When I try to line a cover with the edge of the scanner it doesn't scan that part of the cover, so the result is always a cropped cover. Not sure what causes this, but it has forced me to place the cover away from the edges. I use a ruler to line the cover up in the center of the scanner. It produces a decent result, but when I apply pressure to the lid, the cover is never properly lined up. It's always off by a few degrees. Without pressure the scanner adjusts the cover itself perfectly, but then I get the gutter shadow effect. | | | TV set: SONY KDL-52NX800 BD/DVD-player: LG BH8220BN 5.1 Collection: 801+ |

I've never used GIMP or paint.net (I use Paint Shop Pro) but do they not have a "straighten" function? PSP does. I find a straight line on the scanned image, select the Straighten function, trace the image straight line and press the Go button. The image rotates to the appropriate 0, 90 or whatever degree direction. I'd go insane trying to align the image manually. | | | Bad movie? You're soaking in it! |

| Posted: | | | | Photoshop also has a straighten functionality. In CS6:
1. in the Tools panel , right-click the Eydropper and select the Ruler Tool from the fly-out bar
2. left click and hold &drag the Ruler Tool to draw a line on your image. release to end the line, which can then be accurately adjusted by zooming in and moving the end points
3. go to the menu bar and select Image\Image Rotation\Arbitrary...
to straighten the image to the line. Simples | | | Chris | | | Last edited: by Mole |

| Posted: | | | | Didn't know such a function existed, nor am I sure GIMP has it (I'm not familiar with it, at all). I did google it though, and it appears there are several ways to properly line up a crooked scan. It seems like using the ruler to draw a straight line and rotating manually is the easiest method. | | | TV set: SONY KDL-52NX800 BD/DVD-player: LG BH8220BN 5.1 Collection: 801+ |

I'd go insane trying to align the image manually. If paint.net does, I haven't found it. You can rotate the entire image though so basically what I do is find a straight line somewhere on the cover and rotate the cover until that line is actually straight (if the scan is slightly off). With the crop tool, you can just highlight the area (since the crop tool will always give you a straight line) after rotating it to see if you've gotten it straight. That's the best option I've found using paint.net so far. | | | The night is calling. And it whispers to me soflty come and play. |
