(2) Correct. That's the reason for the proposed plugins - one to create a watered-down Invelos compatible version for those that want it (I don't know what watered-down means yet), and another that allows you to view the complete Gold profiles in some kind of Profiler window - again, I don't know how this would work - just an idea at this point.

Unfortunately, I will now have to change my vote.  While I wish you guys luck, I don't have the time to audit a title per Invelos rules, change it to match this new gold standard, then change it again  for my personal tastes.  And, if I am being honest, linking isn't really something I care about as I don't use Profiler for that purpose.

I really would like to participate in your project.
But I fear that my personal interpretation of the rules is by far too restrictive for most of the other contributors.

Of course, this will depend on the proposed "refinement" for the "Gold-Level"-Rules.

At least I could participate in the evaluation-process (Task 5), if help is needed.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

My original objective was to come up with some kind of process to replace the recurring, sometimes hostile, discussion about problems with the quality and accuracy of contributed data. That was, and still is, my goal. Perhaps I mistakenly thought that is was a consensus that part of the problem was a lack of some technology for getting the Cast/Crew correctly documented. If that is incorrect, then I stand corrected. Anybody who wants to influence the project, just get on the task team and hammer it out, and we can use the results.

+1

But I'm all for improving the system anyway. Just not sure if this is the right way to do it...

If the goal is to create a new, independent database, I would also like to see a new client. Preferably open source, web based, platform independent, etc. And then we should probably move somewhere else as this would not be in Invelos interest because it would ultimately replace DVD Profiler with something else.

If the goal is just to have more accurate profiles within the current system, I first need to understand how this would be accomlished. Would these GOLD profiles be based on films, disc ids or upcs? In short, should it capture film data or disc data or both? Would it be as credited, open credits (custom roles)? What rules should we follow, Invelos rules, new rules, majority rules?

Yes, that's the goal. And getting the answers to all the questions you  asked is the purpose of the project. There is no specific solution presented - certainly not by me.

While I have no big interest in the project, I applaud the effort and (potential) work behind it, as well as the fantastic reasoning.

A few greenies flew in this thread because regardless of the impact this has on my database, this can have a positive impact on many others, so I'm all for that.

Explicitly against the stated objectives. What would be the point of discussing that here?

... change it to match this new gold standard, then change it again  for my personal tastes.

I guess that is thing that confuses me: if there is no "Gold Standard" - some kind of quality model that most all agree is a good thing to have, then what have all these debates been about. Maybe the Gold Standard is what we already have - and all we need is some way to protect a profile once it reaches that level. That's what Task3 is supposed to figure out.

I seem to be in the position of defending a solution that has yet to be created.

All this project pretends to be, is an attempt to put structure around an team effort to create a solution.

This requires that we first define the problem. I took a stab at it, and to simply reiterate: How to impove the quality of contributions to the database, the accuracy of the data, and the ability to protect a quality profile from damage.

That's it. The "Gold Audited" business is simply an arbitrary nickname to convey the spirit of the goal.

I would like to see an additional goal to the project, namely to design and implement a method to propagate the results of the auditing to other profiles when applicable: propagating disc-level data to other profiles having the same disc ID, for instance.

We have a data entry system that is based on hard data from the profuct and thr film credits. These are supplied by the filmmakers or the distributor. IT is not fpr dome fanboy to interpret that data or re-imagine it. The data is what it is and that is where you have to start. Not try and re-imagine the rules, even parsec stressed that.  I think the concept is interesting and has merit, though i see issues to resolve. But you went too far with it

I haven't gone anywhere. I have just asked folks to get together to work on it ...

A perfectly valid set of outcomes for the project could be:
Do nothing (by consensus).
No rules changes needed, only process changes.
... or any other outcome that supports the Goal and meets the Objectives.

I might be able to assist in task 3 (not volunteering for lead at the moment, though).

As for some of the points raised by now:

When Invelos was built on the ashes of Intervocative around 2007, we started with version 3.0 of the program that quickly became 3.1. Five years on we are at 3.8.1, with no clue whether we'll be at 3.13 or 3.14 in 5 years time or finally some 4.0 has emerged. If I remember well a better linking scheme was destined for 4.0 among other things.
If I were Ken and have a strategic interest (income!) in keeping the program alive, I'd be busy adapting PC and/or mobile versions for the current tablet computer hype where needed. Whether that is iOS, Android or Windows (mobile) 8 variants. Since I am not Ken, it is second guessing, but my money would be NOT on DVDp 4.0 in the short term.
So, point is, it makes no sense to keep waiting for 4.0.

As surfeur correctly pointed out, if and when that better linking (and by consequence naming) system arrives, a lot must be done to bring the online db in order. If any rules for 4.0 are not exactly like any 'gold standard' it is easier to adapt a gold profile to those rules and then throw it in the online db. But when 4.0 remains as illusive as it is now, at least people can improve their local db with 'gold' profiles.

For task 3, it would be nice if some people on the rules committee could join. I assume that committee will have loads of cases which could help us avoid pitfalls. It could also help to make sure any differences from the Invelos rules (current and future) will be as little as needed. Some with knowledge of non-latin scripts (Korean, Thai, other Asian languages, Cyrillic languages, etc.) we could also use. But perhaps then I am thinking too much ahead.
Eric

If it is important, say it. Otherwise, let silence speak.

@eommen,
Thanks for that constructive post. If the project moves forward, your creativity will be valuable.

We should know within a day or two, based on feedback and whether Invelos lets us die on the vine, or issues some kind of encouragement, guidance or support.

I will give it a good solid try. I would want to see quite a few more positive responses to the poll before attempting to go much further.
