Very true... I definitely would never go to the real names. One glance at a celebrity's real name site gave me the following... don't know the site so can't say how accurate this is... but...

Alan Alda - Alphonso D'Abruzzo
Jennifer Aniston - Jennifer Anastassakis
Lauren Bacall - Betty Joan Perske
Anne Bancroft - Anna-Maria Louisa Italiano
Antonio Banderas - José Antonio Dominguez Bandera
Jack Benny - Benjamin Kubelsky
Milton Berle - Milton Berlinger
Jack Black - Thomas Black, Jr.
Marlon Brando - Marlon Junior Brandeau
Charles Bronson - Charles Buchinski
Yul Brynner - Yul Taidje Kahn, Jr.
George Burns - Nathan Birnbaum
Joan Crawford - Lucille Le Sueur
Tom Cruise - Thomas Mapother IV
Doris Day - Doris von Kappelhoff
Sandra Dee - Alexandra Zuck

and that is just the tip of the iceberg... where I got tired of copy and pasting.

Do you really want us to use their real names?

I wrote many times my position about stage names, which I consider as "real name" when officially used. Names  that cannot be found anywhere in movies' world (except in Invelos database) can't be considered as "real".

BUT GERARD DEPARDIEU is often found in "movies' world". So it's "real" and no problem...

You guys are really experts in turning around the pot and nitpicking just to prove a point.

Here's the low-down, plain and simple:

1. Surfeur wants Invelos to use correct (i.e. real world) spelling of names. Sometimes, names are misspelled in the credits (in which case whether or not that should be corrected is debatable) but sometimes the spelling errors are introduced due to the existing contribution rules. I can certainly sympathize both with Surfeur's wish to eliminate those errors (and they are indeed, real world spelling errors) but I can also sympathize with Ken's wish to keep contributing as accessible as possible, even to users who don't know the correct capitalization rules for said actor's name;

2. What SpaceFreakMicha brought up is an example of stage name vs real name. That is actually something completely different from what Surfeur is talking about, even though he perhaps didn't express himself very well (real world name in the context of his wish is a name with spelling coherent to the nationality/origin of said person). I don't think he really wants us to use Nicolas Kim Coppola instead of Nicolas Cage.

3. Names like Gerard Depardieu are indeed incorrect in the context of the actual, real world but correct in the context of DVDP contribution rules and/or movie credits. That is not the question. The question is if DVDP should adapt itself to the real world context or remain in it's own little world

4. there's a complete lack of rules regarding Asian naming conventions, making it a real problem for contributors as each can do whatever he or she wants

5. Above mentioned problems cause numerous linking problems which cannot and never will be solved only with CLT results. It's the whole system that needs to be rethought. So:
- either stick with what we have, knowing each user needs to manually adapt many a name to have a locally correctly linking database
or
- complete overhaul of the system to create a correctly linking online database that users can download and only need to adapt in a very minor way to have it to their liking locally.

Personally, I'd favor a complete overhaul but it'll take a lot of work and I don't see it happening right now.

Whatever the case, may I please kindly ask every to stop with those loophole logic reasoning like "GERARD DEPARDIEU" is real or "GERARD DEPARDIEU" is not real. That is neither here nor there as both statements come from withing their own context (real world vs DVDP world) and in their own right, both are correct given the context. Step out of that little box, people, please, as all it will result in is endless bickering and turning around, each chasing their own tail. Why not put all that energy into helping everyone come up with actually workable solutions? Solutions that require a lot of work on the database side but in my opinion, it's the only way to move forward.

That's basically all I have to say about this.

I'm out of this discussion. Giving crew credits a first try by auditing the "PSI Factor"-profiles...

Back to the original topic, yes, I would love something like this. We would need a way to separate different versions of a film, though. This is part of the problem with IMDB data as they only have one listing per movie, even though there may be several versions with different credits. (Coolio in Daredevil, for instance.) I suppose we could make a pinned thread designating the official profiel for lots of movies and just copy any changes there to all releases, btu that would be even more trouble than what we are doing with actors. A program solution would be ideal.
