Luckily we're not in database design. We're just contributors filling the database with data according to Invelos' rules and representative statements. If you have problems with the way the database is designed, feel free to take it up with Invelos. But don't accuse people who are following the rules of "taking the low road".

Excuse me? Is this your database or Ken's?

If you don't care for the way Ken has designed his database why don't you design one of your own.

I find it quite amusing that you trumpet the "rules" when the suit you but call them "the low road" when they do not.

What a shame.

Again with the baseless accusations - is it really necessary to resort to that every time?    If you want to throw out such accusations, would you be up to comparing the value of our work? I'm happy to do that - we could both post the UPC's of the last hundred or so approved contributions from our "Contributions"-pages (if you've actually contributed something useful at all lately, that is), so that everyone can have a look at what we've done. I'd be very interested to see whose work is more deserving of that lovely "what a shame" label of yours... But hey: randomly throwing around false accusations is so much more fun than the actual boring truth, isn't it?

I personally don't like blind copy & pasting from other profiles, and I really wish that if others are going to copy and paste, they at least run a verification scan between the source profile and their own copy.
That being said, a reference to the source UPC, or preferably a link to the contribution notes of the source profile should be required for any profile copy information.  That way, we can vet the accuracy of the contribution relative to the source profile.

This isn't database design, this is data entry and good data entry, as James stated, is defined by following the rules and clarifications given by the database owner/designer.

I am with you on this one.  I don't care for it either but, Ken and Gerri have both stated that it is o.k., so it is something I have learned to live with.

I should have mentioned that I often double check the data I Copy and Paste with the actual credits. If they are missing a lot of data I will stick the disc in to fill in that information so I check everything else while I'm at it.

But, if I'm doing a whole bunch of contributions, and the Cast and Crew data is fairly complete, I'll come back to double checking the credits at another time since that is so time consuming.

Ideally it would be wonderful if I could find the time to do everything for every DVD I own. But, that is not possible.

So, I would rather spend my time and energy fixing a whole bunch of things that are obviously wrong than to double check the completed work of someone else. Besides, someday, someone will eventually get to doing just that.

Since this is in compliance with the standards invelos has in place, I am quite comfortable using this option in the contribution process.

Quite frankly, I've evaluated enough of your contributions that I'm comfortable with you using this option, too.  But there have been other contributors whose submissions I've voted against because it was obvious they were propagating bad data.

Please don't misunderstand.  While I don't care for the practice on a personal level, because it is in compliance with the standards invelos has in place, I don't have a problem with you doing it.  What I may, or may not feel on a personal level, is irrelevant.

If you copy the info from one profile to another, you should copy the notes as well. Older notes are not all available. So when we copy from: for Example a DVD to a Blu-ray. One should also transfer the notes, so we are able to keep the info together, not have to search back to another profile.

I have to say I totally agree with Skip on this. If you want to copy, fine, but don't do so without actually verifying it. It may be allowed, but it's simply bad form and bad practice to copy data over then not do any checking on it at all to make sure it is correct for the disc that is in front of you when you are editing the profile. Yes I do realize that it takes time. But that's what it takes to make a quality user created and maintained database.

Martian:

I understand but the topic to me, on the part of users who simply refuse to provide better notes, displays a level of arrogance, laziness and lack of consideration for his/her fellow users that is just unacceptable. I don't care if we are talking cut and paste, CLT data, Cover Scans whatever it happens to be, such notes are may be accepted by Invelos but it doesn't make them or the user's refusal to do better any less insulting. We work as a team supposedly but we have a number of users who could care less about that.

As I have said before,I will not ask  anyone to vote on sloppy noted or lamely noted Contributions, please don't expect tome to vote positively on yours. I  have far more respect for the users than that.

with a quick check of some credits, you can see if it is from imdb or from the credits.

For the record: rest assured that I do always check against the actual credits - I would never copy IMDb-mined data to another profile. Other than that, I'm with Kathy.

I agree with you on IMDb data T!M. I only copy data from those that have written where they got their information from.

Of course trust is part of the equation - I trust the words of my fellow community members and have seldom been disappointed.

Just to be clear: This wasn't pointed direct or indirect to anyone. Just a general point. (Sorry, if it sounded different)
