It's my intention to upgrade to HD-sound within the next one or two months, I've casted a glance
at the Denon AVR 2310.

Recommendable in the price area (about 800,-- EUR)? Flaws? Alternatives?

The 2310 is an excellent choice..

The only comparable one would be the Onkyo 807.. Which would be my favorite... But the 07 Line is the old one and the 08 Models (like 608) should come shortly.. So far they've only released the low cost models of the new line like 308, 508 and 608.. The higher end models will come soon..

If you wanna save a bit of money you might one check out and read up on the 608 which supposedly sounds just as good as the Denon 2310 and has a lot of nice features and only costs 450€..

Still, the 2310 is just another class of quality..  So it's either the 2310 or the 807 Onkyo.. (I myself would go with the Onkyo as I just love their products)

As for the 2310 and the Onkyo 807.. These are both last years models... I somehow hinted it in my last post but Denon should release the 2311 shortly.. (if they keep the 23XX Line) and the new Onkyo 808 will be available in 1-2 Months also..

But since there were no real technical breakthroughs.. Well actually there were.. Because both of the old models 2310 and Onkyo 807 don't feature HDMI 1.4 which is needed for 3D Playback.. So unless you are gonna buy a BD Player that has 2 HDMI outs (one to connect directly with the TV and one to connect to the receiver) it would be wise to wait till this years models..

Well at least if you plan to convert to 3D one Day... And to be honest, neiter I, nor anyone else can predict how this new format will change the market..

I decided to stay at entry level. The reason is that the next higher models cost about double the price, which does not seem to be justified for my purposes. So the Denon AVR 1911 399,-- EUR, the 2311 899,-- EUR. The Onkyo TX-SR 608 428,-- EUR, the TX-NR 708 790,-- EUR. (Amazon prices)

So it was between the Denon AVR 1911 and the Onkyo TX-SR 608. I read tests and reviews, I read about connectivity, performance, features, quality and design.

I'm absolutely convinced that the Onkyo TX-SR 608 is a valuable receiver and you can't go wrong with it.

But I've chosen the Denon AVR 1911, it was a gut decision, my current Denon served me faithfully since years, deserved brand loyalty. I bought it for 399,-- EUR from Amazon.

I'm very excited.

Denon is still Japanese, isn't it? What about Yamaha? Marantz?

Yes, Denon (and in annex Marantz) as well as Yamaha are all Japanese founded companies, although now I think 98% of Denon shares are in hand of US investors and only 2% remains in hands of Hitachi. Still, I believe Denon very much operates as a Japanese company.
