Searching the Profiler site through Google works quite well. I agree with you that the Forums is not the ideal method, but until you can figure out how to get Ken to work on your timetable, it's probably our best answer. Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! | Posted: | | | | Quoting Ace_of_Sevens: Quote: Basically, it may mostly work, but a forum is far from the ideal way to keep track of this sort of data. As of right now, I think it actually IS the ideal way to keep track of this sort of data and solve some of the ongoing problems. I don't mean to be a douche, but let's face it, with the level of "customer service" we get around these parts these days (seriously... the rules can't even be updated on a biannual basis? That's bull, and Ken, and all of us, know this), this would probably be the ONLY way to keep track of some of this info and to help solve some problems. And it'd be much nicer to have them in a proper place than spread amongst thousands of purposeless arguements in the contributions forum. A new forum or two I imagine would be incredibly simple from Ken's standpoint to implement (he recently did it with the New User's Forum) and since he apparently has no time to work on anything else (other than the next beta with updated features that don't actually address any of the major problems, like linking, that his customers have been complaining about for years now), it would be a simple, quick thing for him to throw together that could be an IMMENSE help to the system. I'm not saying it would be the "be all to end all", but it would absolutely be a step in the right direction. Although, I'm not entirely sure why I'm babbling. Everyone already knows all this info. I don't need to preach to the choir really. Even if this idea had every single member of the forums behind it, Ken's the only one who could implement it, and I don't have that much faith to be honest. It was more of a "who thinks it could work" thread than anything else. I don't expect anything will ever come of it. Again, nothing said to purposely be douchey, just spitting out what I feel. | | | The night is calling. And it whispers to me soflty come and play. |

Your idea of placing the common name thread in a single forum is great. This wouldn't be an area of debate if all of us who own a disc just post a screen capture of the credit in a "How Joe Blow is credited in those film" thread (certainly better than the name tool we have now). But like you my hope to see something come from this discussion are low. It's the problem with a life licence, we don't pay any more so we aren't important except for doing the beta testing and this is more and more apparent each passing day |

| Posted: | | | | I think a new forum or two would really, REALLY help out in figuring out the mess that the CLT is in (as well as the mess we have with incorrect BY's, and the mess that we have with ancient profiles that are unlikely to ever see an update). | Posted: | | | | I'd like to bump this again. Recently, the absolutely awesome work that Sam and some members have been doing in a thread to post which films they've updated to include full cast and crew (which can be found here) re-sparked my interest in a thread dedicated to this type of discussion. If you look at the first two pages of the contribution forums, there's at least 20 threads dedicated to finding correct common names of cast and crew with numerous varients of their names in the system. There's also talk of recent profiles being submitted with IMDB mined information in them (still). It'd be nice to have a place to group all of this stuff together so that common name threads don't get lost in the shuffle (never getting figured out) and so that discussions can be raised in regards to which profiles need updating, or which profiles can benefit from Sam's thread I mentioned earlier. I really think a forum specifically dedicated to this idea would only greatly benefit the community as a whole. | | | The night is calling. | Posted: | | | | Willy Wonka's Wacky Wold of Wonderously Wishful Wa... ... oh, you mean a name that would fit this particular subject? Well, in that case, how about... "Database Cleanup" or "Database Tidying" The section could also include the confirmed BY list and discussions. | | | If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

| Posted: | | | | Never even thought about a name (happy to see the idea is positively recieved!! ) Maybe something that falls in line with most of the other boards? Cast & Crew Discussion Cast & Crew Confirmation Profile Credits Discussion Profile Credits I think Cast & Crew Discussion would probably be an okay name (or an okay starting point). It covers the main aspects of what the forum would be about. Common names, BY's, profiles in need of clean-up, the sharing of profiles with full cast and crew submitted (which could be reviewed by others for errors as well, someone may not realize that the credited as feature should be applied, and we all make spelling mistakes etc.). As for a description, something simple, like the other ones we have here. "Discussion of profile credits. Determine common names, verify birth years and discuss profiles needing updates." "Cast and crew discussion. Determine and verify common names, birth year submissions and profile clean-ups." Maybe worded a bit better (it's late! ) but those seem like okay starting points and would definitely allow users to know what the forum was for. | | | The night is calling. | Posted: | | | | I'm personally against an idea that will reinforce the "common name" concept which is the cause of the failure of our (non) linking system. To replace correct names by fictitious names just because a credit maker made a typo, or a contributor uncorrectly transformed capitalized letters, is a hard work for those who do it and a pain for other database users who have to correct in their local false downloaded information. What is requested here will be a facility to ruin a little more the quality of the database.
But I fear Ken will accept that idea which is easier for him than to work on better linking system. | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |

Nothing changes - the common name system remains exactly the same no matter in which sub-forum we talk about it. | | | Last edited: by T!M |
