This is, after all, the forum of a piece of DVD cataloging software - what do we need political and religious discussion for? Seeing as though recent attempts have almost unanimously ended in disaster, I could easily live without them. "will not". I dont get that "only a DVD forum" -thing people say. If you want to talk about cats do you go to a forum about cats, or just to the topic in GD? If you want to talk about dogs, do you go to another forum or just the topic in GD? I could go on for hours. There is no point in using a diffrent forum for every single subject. Not even for just the hot topics. I want to know what people at DVDP forums think about politics. I dont care what some random sites users think. Ive been using these forums for ~7 years, you know how long it would even take to read a political forum to get a grip on its users? all just so that i could discuss a news piece i found? Theres no point. I can go on without political/religious topics, if Ken doesnt want them here. But i enjoy reading them. I think they are important issues. I think its great that i can talk to someone with a diffrent political ideology. I also can have a debate, even an arguement and not feel any hatred for the person i strongly disagree with. | | | Last edited: by whispering |

| Posted: | | | | I don't see how this is extreme. I'm fine with a permanent ban of religious and political topics. Those are always trouble on any forum. Regardless of the outcome of the trial, I'd like to see that rule stay. Beyond that, I see nothing more restrictive here than I see on many other sites. And even a lot of those sites have a similar restriction on religion and politics. Thanks Ken. I hope this works well for you. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. I couldn't agree more. The topics, in and of themselves, are not bad...it is how people choose to express themselves that is the problem. With a real live person keeping watch, people will have to conduct themselves in a civil manner. If they don't, they suffer the consequences. To paraphrase The Jackson Five...One bad poster don't spoil the whole bunch of posts. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. Although I don't think the fact that this is a DVD collector's forum is a strong argument, it's a simple fact that these discussions simply never remained civil. Rather see them go than have the arguments from before. Quote: - Off-topic posts will be removed This I'm sorry to see. Part of the fun of this forum was the complete tangents that some threads would follow. I hope it's not too strictly adhered to. |

I agree with that. Some of the off topic banter can be quite fun. As long as it's not aggressive in nature then I agree that some leeway should be allowed. |

| Posted: | | | | Definitely don't think the off-topic stuff should be removed unless it's inflammatory. If the thread has gone way off track, then the moderator should post asking to get it back on track. If it doesn't, then the thread gets locked down. |

I agree with that. I'd like to see the "innocent" threads like cat pictures, joke thread etc stay. Sure ,they're not relevant to the program or the database, but they're fun and they let you (sort of) get to know some of the community members. Topics that can easily (and almost always do) lead to arguing like religion and politics I think we can do without. Let's just all agree that the Netherlands have the best politics in the world and leave it at that. |

| Posted: | | | | Happy to see these changes, even if they're only on a trial basis for now. I don't think of them as too extreme at all. Most forums I post at have rules along these lines.

| Posted: | | | | Glad to see this trial. Hopefully the rules will get tweaked as it progresses. Off-Topic discussion is fine so long as it does not completely hijack the thread (and if it does a post from a mod to get back OT should suffice). Hopefully these rules will mean that these forums return to the civilised place they used to be! |

| Posted: | | | | The cat pic thread is safe - we're talking about off-topic posts only. The moderators will attempt to bring the discussion back in line and only remove posts when necessary.
Note that you are extremely unlikely to see any account restriction due to off-topic posting. | | | Invelos Software, Inc. Representative |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting Ken Cole: Quote: (...)Off-topic posts will be removed(...) I don't know what the capabilities of this forum software are, but on other forums (phpBB-based ones definitely) there's the option to split away posts from a main thread. This can be handy when a thread goes off-topic, but that off-topic discussion contains useful information. From memory the mods select a view where they can see checkboxes alongside each post, and select them in that way. The other advantage is that people tend not to get bent out of shape seeing the rant they took half an hour to type forming part of a new topic rather than heading for oblivion. Usually there's also a merge option (merge similar threads, usually when someone points out the other thread, but the topic still goes for several pages in the new thread). | | | Adelaide Movie Buffs (info on special screenings, contests, bargains, etc. relevant to Adelaideans... and contests/bargains for other Aussies too!) |
