Is the problem the addition of links to the child discs profiles or the fact the submitter describes them as a box set?

While i agree it is not a box set i have no problem with linking the child discs (which will make them automagically available to people downloading the parent).

Perhaps they could be convinced to resubmit with notes stating this isn't a box-set change, just linking of disc-level profiles.

The disc id's are already included in the disc section of the profile.

There is no separate information on the disk. no episode, no separate cast list, no separate production dates or crew lists nothing that would not be properly be contained in a "Parent" profile.

Take the movie Pearl Harbor, 3+ hrs that spans 2 discs, no further information is taken because of the second disc.  To me it is the same situation.  Dune is a single production or movie that for TV purposes was divided into 3 sections and now due to DVD requirements is divided into multiple discs.

I'd say the problem is how to ensure the cast and crew list represents the actual cast and crew for the disc in question. So I agree with Charlie on this one.

All valid points and put that way i'd have to agree.

Thanks.

Just because the Disc ID's are already in the profile doesn't mean to say that they will be offered for download when you try to download the parent profile.

I have found, although it maybe a bug, that unless the child profile id's are listed in the box set section in the parent profile, you won't be offered them as part of the parent profile when downloading. So it's no good just having them in the Disc's Section.

I believe that is by design Steve... The boxset contents field is what is looked at to automatically download child profiles... if I am not mistaken.

I don't have this particular title... but the way I see it... a miniseries is still a TV Series. (just in a shorter format) In my eyes a miniseries can be considered a complete series (The entire series lasting 3 [or so] episodes).

I believe miniseries DVDs can fall under TV Series Rules and have child profiles in  certain circumstances. As it is the DVD that we are profiling and not how it was originally aired. In my opinion if most the credits are cut off and it is spliced together to form a single long show then it should be treated as such and only one profile allowed. If the DVD is as it aired on TV and is on the discs as separate episodes... then it can be broken down to disc level profiles using TV Series rules. I have seen it done both ways many times each.

Now as for practical use... I personally wouldn't use child profiles for miniseries. But as I explained above I do believe there is times in which a Miniseries can be treated as a TV Series boxset. As long as it is formatted that way on the disc... it is a TV Series no matter how many (or few) episodes there are.

I wasn't commenting on the DVD/s in question either, I was just making an observation on the comment about being in the Disc ID section.

Only found out about the Disc ID's having to be in the Box Set Section recently when I added some of the "Lost" sets to my owned list, I was asked if I wanted the child profiles for some of the sets but not all, those that I was asked happened to have the Disc ID's present in the box set section, and the set I wasn't offered the chidren for happened to have the information only in the Disc ID section and not in the Box Set section.

So it might be worth bearing in mind for future reference concerning these Parent / Child situations that for the "Option" to automatically download the children the disc id's have to be in the box set section as well.

According to the rules the boxset content has to be in the parent profiles... see where I put in bold (from tv series rules)

Quote:
Individual profiles for each disc may be submitted if desired, but this is not required. Add these profiles to the box set contents of the parent profile. Create each of these individual profiles in line with the standard Contribution Rules with one exception - Cover Images. If a disc, or set of discs, have their own case, use the cover images from that case. When submitting a change to an existing TV series profile that is currently a box set, do not remove the existing contents.

In either case, the cast and crew are to be entered into the parent profile using appropriate episode dividers.

So even if the child profiles are not required... it was put in the rules that if they are made to put the profiles into the boxset content. So those that don't have them there should be contributed to the online per the rules.  And I am sure there is many sets that don't have them listed from before that rule was added.

Yes Pete I know it's in the rules as far as Film box sets go...but not for TV series / season sets. A single series / season of say (one of your favourites I think) "Charmed" would not be required (under the rules) to have the Disc ID's added to the Box Set Contents section. But if you were to be a new user to the program and add series (season) 1 all you would get would be the parent profile because nothing in the rules says that the child profile Disc ID's are to be added to the box set section. Whereas if you where to add say "The Adventures of Indianna Jones" box set you would be offered the Children because as being a box set the Disc ID's are required under the rules.

Not that child Profiles are a requirement under the rules anyway, what I am trying to suggest is that if somebody goes to the trouble to create and submit the children they should also submit an update to the Parent so as to include the Box Set section to enable the Child Profile linking of 3.5.0 (and beyond) for others to benefit from the option if they so wish.

True, but irrelevant. We are profiling the DVDs, not the original broadcast. As Pete explained earlier in this thread: if on the DVDs the episodes do not have their own credits and form a single long show, they should be treated as such, i.e. in a single profile.

But it is required by the rules in the TV Series Rules.... The rules I quoted is from the TV Series section. So go to TV Series Rules... then look under Disc Level Profiles The second sentence in the rules says " Add these profiles to the box set contents of the parent profile." So that right there tells you... if the child profiles are made for the TV Series... you are to put these profiles into the boxset content of the parent profile.

That's quite alright... Things like this is why I am sure to check the rules off and on. Not only to rremind myself of the rules... but to be sure nothing has changed.

It has 3 part's each on 1  dvd.

Sure, but the three parts cannot be profiled individually, since they have no (opening and end) credits of their own on the actual DVDs. Again: compare the 2003 3-hour miniseries Battlestar Galactica.
