The rule on multiple versions of a film is totally irrelevant in this case - as SH84 pointed out, the main feature for the Extended Edition has been split and covers two discs. They are NOT two versions of the same film, they ADD UP to form one single cut of the film, with a whopping total running time of 4 hours and 10 minutes.

Taken from amazon.co.uk:
Special Features
Disc 1 & 2: • Extended Directors cut of the Main Feature • Includes Audio commentaries from director Peter Jackson with writer/producer Fran Walsh and writer Philippa Boyens; Members of the design team; Members of the production and post-production team; Members of the cast

Disc 3: • Introduction from Peter Jackson • "J.R.R. Tolkien: The Legacy of Middle-Earth" Documentary • "From Book To Script - Forging The Final Chapter" Documentary • Abandoned Concept: Aragorn battles Sauron • "Designing Middle-Earth" Documentary • "Big-atures" Documentary • "Weta Workshop" Documentary • "Costume Design" Documentary • "The Peoples of Middle-Earth" galleries with audio • "The Realms Of Middle-Earth" galleries with audio • "Miniatures" galleries with audio • "Home Of The Horse Lords" Documentary • "Middle-Earth Atlas: Tracing the Journeys of the Fellowship" interactive map • "New Zealand As Middle-Earth" interactive map with on-location footage

Disc 4: • Introduction from Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan • "Cameras In Middle-Earth" Documentary • Production photos: a gallery of 69 images • "Weta Digital" Documentary • "The Mumakil Battle" interactive feature • "Editorial: Completing The Trilogy" Documentary • "Music For Middle-Earth" Documentary • "The Soundscapes Of Middle-Earth" Documentary • "The End Of All Things" Documentary • "The Passing Of An Age" Documentary • "Cameron Duncan: The Inspiration For Into the West" Documentary • "DFK6498" short film • "Strike Zone" short film

Skip, you might want to know that the main feature of the extended version of LoTR is stretched across 2 DVDs. So RHo's method is absolutly correct.

If that was what he meant, Sh, you are correct. I was interpreting it as Two versions which happen to be on different discs or sides.

I also agree with the running times as well,, for the extended versions.., The Theatrical versions, are of course a whole new kettle of fish, and those versions will be- and must be the actual running times..

....Wanted to point out though that sometimes a movie will start with a 'Special' primary studios logo
( such as the Universal 75th anniversary logo with the black and white art (plane flying around the globe), then the other old colored art,(fifties-sixties) then the regular type art used in the 70's, then the new upgraded glossy '75th anniversary logo' .,, Then that fades out., then the regular Universal spinning globe coming closer and closer logo pops up as the  movies begins,, then when the title ends two hours later . at the end of the scrolling credits, fade out--  there may be some 'special mention' to the DVD authoring house that mastered or handled  the disc may run a few seconds..
all told this whole process may push the running time over the magic '30 second mark' , which then we would round out to the next minute number above it.. (i.e. 2:16:10  to 2:16:47 - Or 2:17:00 )  .
The authoring of this disc/movie  failed to put the extra logos- etc ., into its own special 'title card' with its own chapters..
How does Invelos feel about this process of adding extra seconds to the 'PowerDVD' of monitoring the true running  time, over the 'studio version' of the same film from another time period ??
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

Of course I can't speak on Invelos' behalf, but I would think all that matters is the running time of the film as it appears on the DVD in question, so in your case including the display time of the special studio logos.

By comparison: we don't correct for the 4% PAL speedup either, which we should do if we were to capture the "true" studio version running time.

What...  We do that all the time, and in most cases the runtime on cover is already changed to match.
We are all at the same age, only at different time...

What I meant to say was: for PAL movie DVDs we use the actual running time in PAL, we don't calculate it back to the "true" running time (4% more).

The information on DVD covers means nothing - in my experience it's highly unreliable.
