A definition I have found is as follows: -

Medieval = of, in the style of , or relating to the Middle Ages.

Middle Ages = (European History) 1. Broadly - the period from the end of classical antiquity (or the deposition of the last Roman emporer in 476 A.D. to the Italian Rennaissance (or the fall of Constantinople in 1453). 2. Narrowly - the period from about 1000 A.D. to the 15th century.

Occasionally known as 'The Dark Ages.'

That cuts out anything to do with Romans then (e.g. Spartacus). Knights in armour qualify, as do numerous serfs, peasants and bad actors.
