| Posted: | | | | I agree with all you said James... on how it is set up now and how it is meant to work. And I do my best to contribute with it. But I personally just do not think it is the best solution for the situation. which is just my opinion of course. | | | Pete |

Quote: Until recently it seemed to be ok (endless arguments about what constitutes the ‘common name’ aside); but I have noticed contributions coming through that are a little worrying. I can’t cite specific contributions (I didn’t make a note....sorry!) but I remember the gist of the contribution notes: ‘Until recently (insert actor) has been known as (insert actor) in the Credit Lookup Tool. However, recently this has changed and now the CLT is giving a different result. Subsequently I am changing the Credited As entry to (insert name); which is now the most common entry.’
This is not an isolated incident. I have seen at least half a dozen of these appearing. It's not an "incident". That's the way the system is designed, for right or wrong. The definition of the name is the most frequently credited name. If someone has 2 film credits and then changes their name and then makes 3 films with the new name, their common name changes. How do you know about, and wherefrom do you get their alias names? For example Liu Chia-Liang. | | | Don't confuse while the film is playing with when the film is played. Occasionally it is referred to as "eleventy-one". Now that this has been said: you are absolutely right, skipnet50. | | | Don't confuse while the film is playing with when the film is played. No.. it should be referred to as "one hundred and eleven". This eleventy abomination in English should be stamped on immediately. | | | Paul |

I would say this:
I would prefer a thread in the forum where people can post their research on any given name so that others can benefit from their hard work.
However, I still think the CA system should be kept locally.
But, for those that want the linking (and those that want others to benefit from their work) the above suggestion would satisfy all. While those in the community who want nothing to do with CA and think the whole thing is a waste of space can ignore the thread and keep their profiles 'clean'. |

| Posted: | | | | Is this not what this thread is about: DVD Profiler "Credited As" Name DatabaseYou start a thread with a crew/cast name, if you figured it all out you post the result in the thread above, or did I missed something in this thread? | | | Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions. | | | Last edited: by ? |

| Posted: | | | | This is only a suggestion…
When there’s multiple credits with the same name IMDB add a number & BY (if they have) to the actor & update all movies currently linked to that Name.
I’m not saying we must add a number …but when crediting a Actor with a BY & it gets accepted can’t DVDP move all titles with that Credit (Actor Name & BY) automatically into the contribution process --So that everyone knows about this change & can still vote No if set Actor & BY if not the same… If someone votes No, only that Title (over all the zones) not to be updated by DVDP & everyone who has that title receives the No Vote + Reason then that title is put aside to be investigated…
For this to work you can only submit a Credit & BY nothing else for that contribution. Why this way, make it easier for DVDP to copy\link the note to each title it’s moving into the contribution process.
Why is this necessary? Well just look at “Paul Rudd [1969]” an accepted Credit & yet no one ‘updated’ any of the ‘Object of my Affection’ titles or hardly any of he’s other titles…
This is by far not perfect and there will be problems where there are actors with the same name & BY but for these few, ones DVDP can work out some other unique separation ‘index’.
Maybe something similar can be worked out for Common Names… |

I would say this: Solid informations about cast and crew alias names are interesting, useful and valuable. They should by no means kept locally. Then again one can admittedly expect from users to contribute names as they are in the credits. But not to make enormous investigations about the eventual existence and commonness of alternate names for each and every cast and crew member in order to provide a rules compliant contribution. I think it simply has to be solved by the system, with alias names as part of the database and separate contribution option. | | | Don't confuse while the film is playing with when the film is played.
