I tried it once several years back.  While it was quite easy to automatically read if a disc was double layered or not, other people had problems running the same code.  So I had to write several different tests to run if one failed.  It wasn't too hard, but it wasn't as simple as it first appeared.  Of course it's also entirely possible that there was a much easier solution that I completely missed (I'm a web guy, not a Windows guy).

Why don't you give it a shot. 

Well as you have noted before, I'm not a REAL progarmmer   - I use .NET (sorry, I think it was Goodguy that was ribbing me on that ...). The DriveInfo class gives totalsize. I don't know how strict the cutoff is for SL vs DL, but if you did it simply on the basis of bytes, I think you'd be correct 99% of the time. But oh yes, I know - this community will demand that 1%!!!! 

Here is a Wikipedia article. I assume the info is valid. There are some slight variations between + and - formats. Based on that article, I would assign any DVD with less than or equal to 4,707,319,808 bytes as SL, and greater than that DL. That means I would misclassify any DVD+R that was greater than 4,700,372,992 bytes but less than 4,707,319,808.

Edit: Ok, I couldn't resist. Cooked up a super simple little prog, here. 

I'd be curious to know if it works (or doesn't  ). Of course it will not know if somebody used a DL format disk to put only a SL worth of data. Don't know whether anybody cares about that.
