Being a former soldier myself, it should be Cpl. John // Miller USMC

or if it was another branch it would be Cpl. John // Miller US Army

People that have retired use this alot. It is done this way for ages out of respect and in my opinion it should be done this way for the data base also, aslong as it is credited that way in the end credits.

In the data base there is a profile of The Guardian with some of the cast credit as Lt. Ron // Fein, USCG as Wickham.

With this pattern we coluld have really strange credits if this guy work in more than one movie over the years.
Cast entries like Cpl. John Miller USMC [Capt. John Miller USMC] and similar constructions. I can not see a sense in that. I would suggest to use the name without the military stuff and use credited as for this.

While I see what you are saying, Hilbert. In reality I don't see this as a very likely problem. They are military personnel first and foremost, and typically work as extras or minor roles in a single movie. I have yet to ever run into a duplicate military entry. The more likely issue would be Cpl. John // Miller, USMC, Ret. but I have yet to see multiple entries of this nature either. So while I understand the theory, I think relaity is another story altogether. Now watch, now that I have said that I will run into one soon. That's always the way it works.

But why not try to find a simple common name?  In this case and in others. Actually this is more work than it needs to be. It would be easier to make some exclusions from the "most credited" rule. For example always use the same standard suffix for junior and senior. Or use use the natural name of the person is there where titles and military ranks. This means to use "Al Gore" as common name instead of Vice President Al//Gore like in Futurama Season Two without using the CLT. This would be a one time work and we never need to touch this entries again...

Agreed. The purpose is to link different credited names in the most efficient way. A simpler system -for example always use the same standard suffix for junior and senior, as you said- would be welcome, IMO.

Good idea.
Of course the last word is up to Ken.

My guess.... There's been attempts to standardize the names in the past and there's really nothing simple about names.
You have people using aliases, then there's the asian names.  Also the accented letters sometimes credited or not.  And don't forget the actresses who gets married, then divorced, the remarried. etc, etc, etc.

The current system has its flaws, but compared to any standards... It's really simple!

I think it would be better to have seperate fields for suffixes and prefixes (except maybe for Jr./Sr. and Roman Numerals) in order to easily filter out any differences in the past or changes in the future.

Is it?
1. For starters, how do you know when a certain name has to be searched for in the CLT?
2. How do you know what other names and variants to compare it with?
3. How can you be sure all the results refer to the same person?
4. How do you know if the correct Common Name has changed in time because of new credits / corrections?
5. How do you count the results? By titles? (including localized translations of the same title), by movies?, by total profiles?

Mostly, when I see an actor name that isn't link with other movies that I own.

I compare it with the credited names I have in those other movies

I will mostly use online ressources to research the person's bio

That the biggest flaw for the current system.  I guess, we'll have to live with it until Invelos comes up with an alternative.

Since there a lot of inconsistency with the results.  For example, an actor credited differently for two profiles of the same movie, I personnelly prefer to count the number of titles/movies.

Well, here I go again, repeating the same old. Ken suggested recently that once a Common name is established the system will make any necessary adjustments automatically. For this i guess we will have to wait and see, how and if that works in practice

That is neither what Ken said, nor what he meant. He only meant that as incorrect entries are being corrected, the balance between two name variants may shift from one to the other. It's still up to us to notice that and change those entries (again). There's no kind of "automatic adjustment" whatsoever.

Odd including military rank in credits.  I've seen them removed from profiles and I've done so as well.

Doc:

I have NEVER done so (removed or not included them), nor have i approved of it. But far be it from me to say anything, since all that happens is endless fights with nobody wanting to listen. Well, Gerri has now spoken to it herself, and what she said was in keeping with where I was. So let's close the topic shall we, they are not guild/associations and are included. I don't need to say anything more. Or are we also unwilling to listen to Gerri. Hmmmmmm

Why is this still a question?  First, Ken said we are after the 'most commonly credited form of the name', not a 'simple common name'.  Second, Gerri gave her opinion on this matter..back on the first page.  Her opinion, which I have quoted below, was to include the rank and military branch designation.

That should be the end of it...or am I missing something?

Quoting Gerri Cole:
Quote:
I would agree with including the USMC. In my opinion, I would consider as all part of his rank, which was included in these credits.

Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
