i'd have to shoot this one down... this is dvd profiler, not movie profiler... and what this is getting out makes everything more complicated, which will detract from value.

Well, actually right now it's "a bunch of neat features that don't work" Profiler when half an actor's movies don't show up in a list because of a stray comma.  Throwing the red herring of "movie Profiler" out there does nothing to address this fact.

Separating the movie details from the DVD details would make sense from a database point of view - if there was a unique identifier for each movie version. Unfortunately movies don't come with an UPC or similar identifier that would let us know which version is which.

So, in my opinion, this may look like a good idea, but I fear than it may create more problems than it solves.

I think, concerning the data structure, there are more things to think of. Just throwing in:

a) You'd need something in between the "movie profile" and the "dvd profile" which tracks localization: Role names, rating, run time (yes, PAL runtimes are different to NTSC ones), ...

b) normalizing the data base - yes, that's the technical term behind - has to be started at the bottom: first we have to solve the problems with the "helping tables": actors and crew members, which have to be consolididated to one "person database" and where the linking problems seem still exist; studios, ...

c) we'd need a naming sheme for movies: how will we retreive and distinguish different versions of the same film: directors cut, re-releases, cut versions, versions for different countries, etc.

Just some points flashing to my mind without any claim of beiing comprehensive.

Complete list of Common Names  •  A good point for starting with Headshots (and v11.1)

This would be covered by the "dvd profile", which would still be as unique as it is today.

a) If I understood northbloke correctly the "core profile" or, as I called it in the"Rename Name Fields" thread, "Reference profile" should only contain the most common data of the film, all variations due to different releases are for normal profiles.
So in this case it wouldn't matter if there were different versions.
If the "Core Profile" would be used as a "reference" where you can check for verified data of the movie in question, new releases would get a better start-up and false entries could much easier corrected.

b) This "Core Profile" would be an attempt to consolidate the cast&crew databases, since then you'd need a good reason to contribute a variation.

c) The naming scheme would be quite simple: Original Title

The problems I see are more on the practical side:

The questions are who releases and approves these profiles, who will be allowed to make changes (crosslinks, recognized uncredited cast, etc), and how do we make sure that for a new release the corresponding reference profile is used?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?
