Also  The BD players are twice more expensive,,and in today's economy I thought the all mighty buck $poke first over quantity,.,
( not quality)  but quantity.

If you could get 3 VHS tapes for the price of two DVD's, would you do it?

I know what I would choose - my VCR had to stay hungry...

I figured that it was most likely going to be Blu-Ray that eventually won, but I was not going to spend any of my money until this was a done deal.

While all of the movie studios played a part in the outcome, it was the consumers who made the decision.  Blu-Ray was outselling HD DVD by a large margin.  Not that there was a high volume on either side.  But, the studios were definitely watching to see what the consumers were doing.

One thing that I don't understand though...  In reading about the coming demise of HD DVD, it was stated that the navigation on the HD DVD side was better.  How is the navigation tied to the physical media format?  In my experience as a programmer, the user interface is not tied to the underlying structure.  It is actually the purpose of the user interface to hide these complexities.

I have not used either HD DVD or Blu-Ray, so I have no personal experience with either to help me understand this.

I read somewhere that HD DVD screen menu was easier setup than Blue Ray was as per navigation.
The BD discs do hold 25% more information than HDD does.., But I hear they are more prone to scratches, than HDD is., as this information is Just under the surface of the plastic thin coating, where as HDD  'pits' are three times deeper.  Both discs prices are the same.,  Also  The BD players are twice more expensive,,and in today's economy I thought the all mighty buck $poke first over quantity,.,
( not quality)  but quantity.

There's nothing like FUD.

Blu-ray discs have a protective coating, they're not "easier to scratch" or "more prone to scratch" than HD DVD.

BD Players are twice expensive? Well, yeah since Toshiba is having another "firesale". If they were not in panick mode #2, prices would be 10%-15% off.

That being said, you can pick up a future-proof BD player starting at $399

They all have protective coating,, but if these BD reflective pits are only .001 below the surface and HDD is .003 below,, which of the two is better protected? ..

Which is how they get 25%  more recording doen on a single disc.

I was HD DVD only.  But at this point, I'm throwing my weight (buying dollars) behind Blu-ray.  Dragging this out even further isn't doing anyone any good.

So there's no way I'll touch this petition.

Let me know when your HD DVD's are for sale..

If you're willing to buy them at full price, let me know.  Otherwise I have no plans of getting rid of perfectly good discs.

Have you seen or touched a Blu-ray disc?

I am talking about a thick protective coating. Not a coating, a PROTECTIVE coating.

There was a video of someone trying to destoy a BR disc, I'll try and dig it up.

Hi Guys,

Something missed here was HD_Dvd attempt to catapult itself, to greater acceptance than BR. Over Christmas HD Dvd player could be bought for $99.00 at Wal Mart. The failed market penetration, was not missed by Time Warner.

Also the adoption of VHS over Beta, owes much of its success to adoption of VHS by the porn industry.

Take Care

That is funny.  Of course getting the PS3 to recognize it (what they proved) and reading the whole disc start-to-finish (what they didn't show) are two different things.

I've rented stuff from Netflix that looked like it'd been strapped to the bottom of someone's foot for a day on the beach.  Some played, occasionally they didn't.

Tangentially, it made me realize we need a You Tube version of The T.W.I.N.K.I.E.S. Project

HD-DVD was a good thing but I like to look for the future with more space on one disk so Blu-Ray have the storage capacity that HD-DVD dont have. And the 200gb and 1tb is comming soon for Blu-Ray

I honestly don't believe that we'll ever see anything more than 50gb on Blu-ray.  Here's why:

1) What's the need?  I can't think of any movies that won't fit on 50gb.  Sure, you could put Lost out on 2 discs instead of 5, but I don't think there's a big demand for that.  And even if there are a handful of super long movies, I don't think that's reason enough to do this.

2) Everyone knows that 50gb initially had big problems with replication.  Things seem to be getting better, but I think 4 or more layers would be a nightmare.

3) Would the current players work with more than 2 layers?  I don't know, but my instincts say no.  Blu-ray is already getting a small amount of bad press for their various profiles and at least in that case, any player should play the movie at least.  If you have players that won't even play the movie, that's going to be a PR disaster.

4) I think there are cheaper options for computer backup than optical disc.

For the record, I did believe in 51gb HD DVDs.  I don't believe the need was there for larger discs (in all but a few cases of course).  But it would have been a PR goldmine to say HD DVD's could actually hold more than Blu-ray discs.  Wether they would have ever been used is another question.  But they had good reason to try.  And there were lots of rumors that suggested that current players would have been compatible.  That's not too hard when you don't have a lot of companies producing players.

BD discs arent more prone to scratch, but if you do scratch them they are done, they skip, freeze, etc and become pretty much worthless with a minor looking scratch.  By the way, I have a bd-up5000 so i could care less about a format war.  just stating the experience i have.
