It used to be real easy in the early days of dvd. If the playing surface was gold, it was dual. If silver, single. Now you don't see as many gold ones and most DL are silver.

If I can't find the info on Google (i.e Name of movie+dvd+Dual layer).. I would look at the running times of the disc in question and by adding the movie run times and the extra featurettes etc.. if it is over 150 min it could be DL  .    ??

Might you be hitting the Tab key?  You will see the focus change from one field to the next, including circling the words "Dual Layer" if you do this.  I can tab between fields and see what you describe, i've don't recall seeing it after an Add Disc using the mouse.

It wouldn't be hard (said the guy not writing the code) for the program to check the disc size (or other parameters) and determine Single/Dual Layer.  If it's over 4.7 (something) GB it's dual layer by definition.  And when it's over 4.7GB it's usually well over so it's never a hard call.

I wouldn't trust runtimes to tell. It might work on some discs (those 4 hour per side porns are obvilously DL  ) but I have some old discs with tons of stuff crammed onto a single layer.
If you have a dvd drive, that's the easiest way to tell just by opening up "my computer" and seeing how big the file on your drive is. If it's over 4.7 or 4.8G, it's dual no question. If you don't have a drive, try that barcode around the center ring trick (dual layer will have 2, singles 1). So far it's been 100% on discs I looked at (only a couple dozen, but it's that's not bad). Not all off them had numbers but they had what looked like the literal bars of barcodes. One eevn had them tagged "layer 1" and "layer 2".
