I owned Dogville for ages, thinking exactly like that. Eventually I attempted it and hated it. I'm sure it is very very clever, but I don't watch films just because they are clever. I found it absolutely impossible to be involved in any way and ended up watching it in fast forward!

Do you know anything about it? I bought it based on the story, with only a vague notion of the format and it's the latter that will dictate whether you find it watchable or not. You can hope for twists to rescue a story you might not be enjoying.

I seriously suggest you pop the disc in and pick a random chapter. If you think "hmm this looks interesting", fine, try it properly. But if you think "what the hell is this crap?", the entire film is like that!

I made it through (barely) Breaking the Waves, and I actually thought Dancer in the Dark was one of the most emotionally intense and amazing films I've ever seen ..... though I would really hesitate to recommend it all but a very few close friends. Bjork was incredible (but she apparently came  close to a nervous breakdown after her experiences on the set, and has said she would never make another movie) .... of course she did make another film with her main man Mathew Barney.

I don't know what it is about Dogville exactly that keeps me at bay.  I have read good reviews, though they are few and far between. Of course I've also read dozens of "OMG, this was the worst trash ever" type reviews too.  The straw that may have broken it for me was when I read that Nicole Kidman had originally signed up for 3 movies with Von Trier, but after her experience on the Dogville set, stated something like "I want to get as far away from that **** as possible"

The guy may be some kind of genius but his rep for abusing actresses makes Hitchcock look like Mr. Rogers. He is certainly is pushing the envelope of the medium, and the buttons of most movie goers.
I don't know, I just haven't felt the need to have my senses ravaged by a madman/genius  yet .... perhaps I will someday.

I haven't seen any of the Godfather films, nor Goodfellas, Scarface or Pulp Fiction. And to be honest, I have not a huge interest in seeing them either. I see there's a lot of titles on the IMDB top 250 list I have not seen. But interestingly enough, I've seen a lot of the "Bottom 100" 

My friends are generally more surprised at what I have seen, rather than what I haven't. I rectified one glaring oversight recently when my girlfriend realized that I hadn't seen Fried Green Tomatoes, so she made me buy it...

Personally I am more ashamed of the number of Bergman films that I haven't seen. You'd think that being a Swede I would prefer Bergman to Kurosawa, Fellini et al, but no. I have seen a few Bergman films, like The Seventh Seal and The Silence. I have Fanny & Alexander in my unwatched pile...
