O.J. Simpson would be an interesting case to tackle as he is more widely known as O.J. However, his given name is Orenthal James Simpson.

He's also a creep and a criminal so I hope I don't own anything he was in

Me too.

As a matter of curiosity surfeur, how would the French write Jean-Paul in terms of initials? Would it simply be J. or J.P. or J.-P.?

That would be J.P Belmondo. In fact french people usually have a second name, but it is quite never used, except on official papers.
So, for Belmondo, the correct entry is Jean-Paul//Belmondo

I understand what you are saying but it doesn't apply here.  We are talking about people that are credited with initials.  'Jean-Paul//Belmondo' would not be correct for a credit of 'J.P. Belmondo'.

Is the 'Naked Gun' series out on DVD?

I think surfeur was just using Jean-Paul Belmondo as an example to show how the initials would work in a French name.
So if you did have a French actor called Jean-Paul who was known commonly as J.P. then both initials would belong in the first name field, not split as you usually would.

If they are, I don't own them

I should have bolded the above words (note, did so in bold)

O.k. I understand...but wouldn't that be covered with documentation?

I remember seeing O.J. play when he was a member of the Buffalo Bills; one of the greatest athletes I've ever seen. But...as a season ticket holder it really bothers me to see his name up on the Wall of Fame in Ralph Wilson Stadium. I won't give up my movies that he appears in but I can never view them the same way again.

I have an entirely different view of OJ today than i used , but face casts people the prosecution left holes big enough that I could have gotten OJ off, they BLEW IT big time. That said I recall TB vs. Bills 1976. OJ
took a handoff and ran smack into Dewey and Leroy Selmon, he didn't go down but they stopped him cold, I watched Leroy grin at his brother and they both reached down and grabbed an ankle, turned OJ upside down and gave him a little "Grab him by the leg and make wish" and then set him down. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

I agree with Hal and Behemot's additions. In short:

A. B. C. should be parsed A./B./C.

A B C should be parsed A/B/C

AB C (with no point between A and B) should be parsed AB/ /C

I have an acquaintance from North Carolina whose given name is "J.B. McCullough" - just the initials.  I don't know how he would parse them (like Harry Truman, he doesn't have a middle name) but what I'd do is parse his name as J./B./McCullough - for consistancy.

[Off topic, slightly]
Does anyone realize that in English history, a hyphen between last names (Smith-Jones) indicated a bastard relationship (e.g., Smith the illegitimate son of Jones) and that the hyphen represents a "bar sinister" in heraldry - shown on a coat of arms as a line from the upper right to the lower left?  I often wonder about that when I see someone combine names.
