Skip, the codec may or may not be useful to you.  Only you can answer that.  I listed something things I may want to do with such data, but in the end, only you can determine is there's any value for you or not.

The only point I'm trying to make is that just because person A finds the data useless doesn't mean it will be useless for person B.  If the data doesn't hurt you in any way or change how the program operates for you, why oppose the suggestion?

I am not really opposing it, i am trying toifigure it outfrom my own POV and perhaps from broader perspective, which was why I suggested perhaps using the tags. My biggest single issue is that is highly technical, which does not make it bad, but it does mean that it will not be easily adresable by the larger Community, personally, I have the tools i can deal with almost anything you throw at me, the question is value.

I like the idea of having the codec. After all we already have the audio codec. DTS/DD5.1/DD2.0 etc.

It's hard to get codec information prior to release, even with contacts in the industry.  For some reason they like to play that close to the vest.  But I can certainly see its utility on a wishlist after the disc has been released.  If you don't like MPEG2 and don't want to buy discs that use it (with the not unreasonable expectation of an upgrade in the future), having that info would be handy.

AVC seemed early on not to be as good as VCI early on in HD DVD (too much filtering softened things), but in recent months Paramount's crew in particular has gotten very adept with AVC and I can't tell the difference between an AVC and a VCI rendition from them any more.
