I bought it on ebay, the guy said he very often gets dvd's made in china like this one but guaranteed me it's not a bootleg.

I have a bridge for sale if you'd like one

From what I can find on the web China doesn't have a film rating system at all, and if we guess this is a Hong Kong release they don't use +18. They also have a very strict censorship policy, which I'm not sure this would pass.

Really wish you could provide us with cover scans.

There is no R logo on the cover but on the dvd it is ALL NTSC + 18 rated
There are some company logo s on the back like the zalman king company logo and showtime entertainment and Z Digital

Piracy is big business in China, and I suppose technically it's not called bootlegging because China doesn't recognise our copyright laws. I've even seen factory-pressed pirated discs fom China - it's that professional!
But it still sounds very much like a bootleg to me, and I don't trust ebay sellers any more - not with all the copies.. I mean "imports" I've been sent in the past.

That cover looks legit, although it looks like a R1 cover.
Does it feel like a normal cover, like thick glossy paper. Also are the colors solid (hard to tell from scan) like they were professionally printed? Any fuzziness around words or edges is a sign of fakery.

The cover doesn't feel like a professional glossy and the back as you can see on the scan, has vertical stripes through the colors.  The letters look both solid and unsolid to me, but if you look at the Showtime logo, I get the feeling it's printed by a printer.
The cover should suppose to be a R1, but I don't understand why the DVD got to be a R0 NTSC + why does the cover states (C)2000 and the DVD (C)2002????

The DVD wasn't shrink wrapped in plastic and the data on the disc is about 3,91 GB.

They aren't always wrapped in the UK and a single layer disc is only just over 4gb of data.

A standard commercial single sided disc contains 4.7G of usable space.  With proper compression you can push that up to about 7G.

I do have the odd legit R1 release that doesn't contain the rating or unrated warnings, but just a 'this contains x content' warning.

I'm leaning towards this being a Chinese boot as in they don't recognise US etc... copyright laws so release what they like. Coupled with poor picture quality and what sounds like a home printed cover.

The showtime dvd store at www.sho.com doesn't list a US release. Might be worth trying to email them to see if they know of a Chinese release.

Hmmm, interesting if its pirated it's a good job, I don't see any of the normal cues that would indicate a bootleg. But I agree, I am not aware of a R1 release of this at this time.

I have the feeling that the following DVD I bought is a bootleg but still doubt and wondered if I can add the title to the archives (if DVD is an official release only off course).

7-58445-50082-0  Red Shoe Diaries: Luscious Lola

The reasons why I think it's a bootleg:

1/Made in China, Korea actually
2/Cover smells like printer ink + iit's quality is very weak (vertical stripes in the background)
3/DVD states 2002 as production date while cover says 2000
4/Weak DVD quality, seems like VHS transfer
5/Cover doesn't state there is chinese subtitles or any other chinese signs, while DVD disc does contain Chinese writings.

How can one check that this DVD is original and not a bootleg?
Thanks!

I think that you already know the answer....it's a bootleg. If the quality isn't there then that is the giveaway. The cover scans seem to check out but as you said, the quality isn't there. See:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-images/B00004YA1L/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_all/102-8419681-0804109?ie=UTF8&s=dvd#gallery

Be wary of E-Bay sellers with Chinese sources for out of print or yet to be released titles. They seem to specialise in these.

It's a bootleg and not a very good one.
The R1 is out of print and used copies sell for quite high prices.
If it were a real R3 DVD they might use almost the same cover but there would be the company name for the R3 licence holder on the back, and on the opening credits/menu.

Bootleggers can go to a lot of trouble to make it look real. Ever Anime or Anime Cartoon (Taiwan Bootleggers)  sell you a pressed SL DVD with colour silk screen disc art, and a digipak with slip cover. They have a web site (with a hotmail address for the contact... opps). But you get 7 x 25 minutes on a SL disc and crappy English subtitles.

If it's on Ebay, and the seller lists lots of discs (not someone selling off a couple of unwanted discs) assume they are bootleg. If you ask they will always say it's not a bootleg.
Tom.
