I think some are over -estimating the complexity of implementing this (from a user perspective that is, programming it is an entirely different matter). The way that I would imagine it being implemented is that there would be a change applied to the program and the data separated out for all existing profiles as though they were totally independent films. The new function would require some way of linking a DVD to an existing film, so user could simply link the existing DVDs to the film of their choice (i.e. the best profile) and the systems would automatically delete the defunct info once it's approved.

There'd be some hoo-har and back-and-forth until all of the profiles were whittled down to "the chosen one" (a DVD Profiler version of 'Highlander' if you will ), but fundamentally it's not that tricky.

The more serious problems would be things like different credits for different releases (e.g. dubbing in different languages), and much as I think it would be an improvement, I think issues like this would probably make Ken decide it wasn't worth the hassle.

You've also got the added problem of which profile to use if this were to go ahead - who would decide which profile survives and which we lose?

Why "lose"? There would be a common Film Profile.
The first contribution would start the new Film Profile.
Others could always update it, if needed.

There's several hundred thousand profiles already out there.  That's what he's referring to.  Not new profiles.  It's easy going forward.  But you would have a HUGE problem retrofitting this onto the existing database.

There can be two different ways to handle that issue.

First way: At the beginning, the new Data Film Branch would  be empty. The first who submits a "common profile" for that film would decide what data to keep from old profiles. Other DVDP users could always update those data using data from "old profiles", if they want. Votes will decide who is "right".

Second way: At the beginning, the system could automatically pick an old profile to keep. Which one? Perhaps, the first release in chronological order. So, the "first release" profile's film data would automatically survive in the new Film Data Branch. Again, users could always update the new profile using data from other old profiles, if they feel those were more accurate.
