The collection number system needs some improvements, specially for people with multiple discs

Eg I'm adding a box set with 3 discs and it gets Collection number 1, it would be nice if you could reserve 2 and 3, so they are not suggested next time I add a dvd, because I want to start from number 4. And there should be a list with the gaps and reserved numbers, so you could easy see the gaps and add/remove reserved numbers.

Also it should be optional that when adding a dvd, it takes the last free number and uses that as a suggestion, if you don't have reserved any of the numbers in the gaps.
Eg. i got dvd's from 1-20, a gap from 21-22, dvd's from 23 to 30, a gap from 31 to 33 and then dvd's from 34 to 40. It should suggest 41 as the next number when adding a new DVD and not 21, but again it should be optional via settings.

And on a side note, it would be great if you in the program settings could permanently remove blu-ray and hd-dvd from the Add new dvd box.

But really great program, a happy new "unlimited" user

I agree with this!! I have many gaps in my collection because I like to number my DVDs by genre. So I have the 100s for one genre, then the 200s for another, etc. So I leave many gaps. Last year someone also asked for numbering by genre: it could have a prefix of some kind, then I wouldn't have to worry when I reached the end of my gaps!

why not just sort the display by genre? then you could leave the collection number to be automatically created.
(I think it will sort by the 1st named genre.. I don't have the app at work)

Yes, it sorts by the primary genre by default.

There are other reasons to leave gaps too. I keep my dvds in purchase order except that I keep sequels together, so I leave a gap in the collection number if i know there is a sequel coming out, so right now I have spider-man as #92, spider-man 2 as #93, and then no #94 because thats for spider-man 3 then it goes to resident evil at #95, which reminds me i need to shift my numbers to fit the new resident evil in at 97 a process that while easier in 3.x than 2.x does still not work quite as i would like)

You could identify the sequels with the sort title field leaving the collection number to be in the order purchased.  Say you renumber to make room for the new Resident Evil at 97.  What happens in a year or to if, God forbid, they make another Resident Evil.  You'd have to renumer all over again.  To me it makes more sense to use the sort title to determine how original/sequels are displayed and leave the collection number free to reflect the order my DVDs were purchased.

well i think purchase date does a pretty good job of keeping the order that your dvds were purchased.

to use the sort title i would have to modify every dvd's sort title, and still need to shift them all down if a new resident evil is released. I sort by collection number and that changes the order the dvds show to the order they are on my shelf. If I sort by title, then its no where near the shelf order...

now if i can sort by slot location, i can make that work once i finish putting all my slots and locations in.

its not to bad to insert a collection number as it shifts everything up, perserving gaps i left for movies i know that have sequals....the real problem is that i cant say to not shift above 1000 which is where anime starts and that doesnt need to be shifted to account for my new title.

Agrare,
if you keep your DVDs in purchase order except for sequels - why not just put a fake purchase date in the sequel profile so they automatically appear next to the first film? No need to use sort title or collection numbers to keep them in order.

Well, putting in a fake purchase date menas you dfon't have the real purchase date.

My curiosity is why the need to keep sequels together while sorting by collection number? That's what sort by title is generally for.

It's not so much that I need it, more thats how i do it.Thats how i store my dvds on my shelf, in the order i get them with the exception that i keep sequels together. Therefore, when i put dvds in I would like to be able to view them in the order they are on my shelf (sometimes people put them back in the wrong spot or as my collection grows its harder to rememer the order). I also use the collection number to keep my movies, anime, and tv shows seperate.

If i want to view my collection alphabetically i can sort by title, if i want to view it in the order i bought them, i can sort by purchase date, in my case, if i want to view them as they are on the shelf, i use collection numbers which i have set to handle that.

Since collection number (at least as i understand it) is a totally personally choice as to how to assign them the ability to reserve blocks, insert (which is there), choose to have it auto assign new numbers after the highest number as apposed to first available from 1 would only serve to make this field more versitle. Is it necessary to add these things in? no, but it would be nice.

There is no need for it. Its just my personal preference for how i keep my dvds. Sure it makes it hard for other people to find, and drives people nuts, but its my collection and i should (and do) be able to store it how i please. And i please to do it in the order i bought them, but i also want sequals together. And to be honest, part of why i keep it like that is because it does drive people nuts, so im gonna keep it that way.

-Agrare

p.s. not saying anyone was trying to tell me I can't keep it that way, just trying to explain why i use collection numbers like i do
