Maybe the system could simply automatically cast a YES vote when you click the link to download the contribution.  After all if you download it you implicitely acknowledge the validity of the contribution.

Not exactly. For example, I am voting according to the rules and I am downloading according to my personal preferences which not always matches the rules.

I agree with Tom... it is one thing if you want to download them from the vote screen... but downloading should not be considered a yes vote.

Not if you're only downloading specific fields.

This is almost beginning to sound like a step backwards, hal. IF i understand you correctly the Online and its content becomes totally irrelevant and it returns to the days of the Wild West,  and you are free to accept data in whatever form you personally approve of. I think you mean well, but I almost think this would be better done by PM' ing the user a requesting his content, if you like it. I do this from time to time and other users request my content either data or images. Its not a big deal.

I think it could be useful also.

The way I see it working, if you see a contribution up for voting and it is a good contribution (meaning that you believe it to be correct and within the rules) you could click download and vote yes in separate steps. Then, a few days later when the contribution is accepted, since your information would already match, it would either not show up as an update or would be skipped with the skip all unchanged option. One benefit would be the CoO only updates, vote, d/l and whamo shorter list to go through when they finally come through.

We would still be voting yes or no to contributions according to the rules and the integrity of the online would not be compromised.

This has nothing to do with what gets into the main database!

It does nothing to change the voting system itself, so how would it impact the main database?

The online becomes irrelevant for updates only for those who choose this method, but I am not suggesting the elimination of the existing update function for people who prefer to do it that way.

Regardless of which method you use, the main database will always be relevant for adding new profiles to your local database.
