I just picked up the Epson 4490, had a look around in 2 stores but I think this is the best scanner they had for the kind of price range ($200-$250).
Will try it out tonight.  So, if I want to submit some new cover scans, is there a certain size they have to be?
I personally like them around 555x800 at 150-250kb

Instead of finding all the ones that need switching I think I might just end up scanning my whole collection, which will definitely keep me busy for a while.

The contribution system will crop them at 500 max width and 700 max height.  It will also recompress them if they're too large (over 200,000 bytes each for front and back).  If they're within these ranges, they will not be touched on the local system or by the contribution acceptance system.  2.x would recompress them at least twice no matter what.  That's why 3.0's images are generally more free from compression artifacts.

If you ever need to work out how to do this do not follow the Epson instructions, there are quicker and easier ways that anyone can manage    (was worth the service call to find out though).

I use windex,, is there a better way?? I won't follow Epsons instructions,, what did you find out??

I remember my old HP scanner had 2 screws on the back side and once you got those taken out you could take the whole top off.
After several years of not being used at all it started to have this milky film from the inside plus lots of dust of course.  I think the milky thing might be due to the high moisture in the air here.
Anyways, Windex and a cloth that does not leave any lint worked wonders.

I am still pretty interested what MoonShadow found out though?
