Ah, sorry about misunderstanding your comment, MD.  I just thought it was a reference to one of the many benefits of the plug-in, not a caution.

Good question about data loading; I guess I should have explained.  I tried flagging a small number of profiles (4-5, all on my wishlist) and loading those, with only the Wish Priority field checked.  The only field that showed up in the work area was the disc ID.  I also tried the Load Wishlist choice, and all the IDs for DVDs on my wishlist appeared, but no other columns, regardless of what I checked in the list.

I guess I may have to either try an export-replace-import, or just go to each disc and manually change that setting.  (I'm not sure if I explained this in my original posts or PMs, but the reason this is such a pain is that I have a 3,200 DVD collection which I'm about to sell off, and I'm using the Wishlist to segregate 1,000 or so discs that I'd like to keep.  I wanted to put them there so prospective buyers could still browse those titles online and make me an offer, if they're interested.  Having things like "Vague Interest" in that column could be confusing, and they're definitely unnecessary.)

Thanks very much for trying to help, and for your excellent responsiveness to all the users on this forum.  If you have any other ideas or suggestions, please let me know.

Bob

P.S.  One quick question:  if something with my installation of .net services was damaged or otherwise screwed up, might that cause the problem?  I had to uninstall and reinstall .net (1.x, 2.x, 3.x, etc.) not long ago, and there may still be problems with it.  Just curious.

I wouldn't recommend the export-replace-import scenario, since it is clear that something is very wrong with the plugin operation. I can usually reproduce reported bugs, but I have never seen what you are reporting. I am using V1.25 on Vista Home Premium with Profiler 3.5.1 Build 1252.

I have been able to edit and update WishList Priority in both the scenarios you described.

Maybe you asnswered this already, but are you using the Beta? Can't think of much else that could cause this. It could perhaps be a corrupted .NET, but I don't have any experience with that.

Thanks.  Not sure about the beta question.  I'm going to uninstall the plug-in, re-download and reinstall it, just to see what happens.  If I make any progress, I'll let you know.

And if I can't get it to work, 1,000 or so Ctrl+P/click/repeat operations aren't so bad, if you do them in small batches.    Plus, I can launch the sale without changing the priority field, and just explain it in my email to friends and family.

Much appreciated (and happy holidays!),

Bob

Ok, good luck. But I'm surprised that you don't know whether or not you are using the Beta version of Profiler.

All these posts and I have yet to learn what version of Profiler, and what OS you are using. But maybe I missed it - I did re-read the posts. I've been trying to help you, but if my program is failing, I also need your help to try and figure out why. Knowing that you can do it without the plugin is not a consolation to me - that's a given.

I'm interested in using the custom display and reporting capabilities of DVD Profiler to present information from a non DVD database.  Can your (or another) utility be used to import manual data and map it to the various DVD Profiler fields?

Oh, I like the idea of a mapper. Maybe someday. But for now you have to use another mapper to prepare your data into one of the specific formats that BulkEit supports.

Note: All that follows applies to Version 3.5 of Profiler with a few exceptions.

BulkEdit will import the following formats:

- Profiler 3.5 XML format
- Plugin CSV Export (several formats - see the documentation)
- Obsolete Web Site "DVDSpot" format
- Collector Z Movie format: at least at one point in time. I don't know if the format has changed since I made the conversion. I have not had any reports of errors, but I have no clue whether anybody is using that feature.

The most complete import should be from Profiler XML. That is the one format that I am pledged to fix with high priority. Second is the CSV Export. Its author has agreed to inform me of any changes that might affect my import process.

The other plugin you will absolutely love is Database Query, once you get the data in there. Keep me posted on any progress / problems. If I am not mistaken, I think my plugin ships with an import guide. Also, here is information in the General Information Forum, in the User Migration Assistance thread.

Good luck!

BTW there are some other users known for tremendous kitbags of tools, such as Mithi (XSLT) and DJ Doena (MS Access). Check out some of their posts.

Thank you for the info.  I have been reviewing your suggestions.  What I haven't found is the best way to import my "cover" scans.

See Image naming conventions for starters, with the right name you just have to throw them into the right directory.

With DVD Profiler, if you are importing commercial DVDs that are already in the database, there is no need. Cover scans are (generally) already provided. In the cases where you can supply missing ones,or better ones, you can "contribute" them through an orderly, documented process. (Doh! I see now that you already said it was a non-DVD database. My own media library contains thousands of non-DVD items that I will someday import - that was one of the original motivators for me doing the Import function. But alas, I didn't do my own yet - too busy making stuff for everybody else.  )

If, on the other hand, your covers are for DVDs that you would not expect to find in the online database, you can add them manually to the folder where cover scans are stored and use the same naming scheme. Simply export a few profiles to XML and you can see the format and paths to the covers on your system. You should probably do this after you decide on a naming scheme for your custom profiles (we call them "manual" profiles).

Oh, I see Mithi beat me to it!!!

By the way, if what you are doing is something you don't mind sharing, tell what you are up to. If it is something that I or somebody else wants to do, you can probably get some collaboration. There are some guys in this forum that I have seen do some amazing things with scripts.

Ok, once you do the mapping to Profiler fields, then set up a CSV file using a template like this:

"UPC","Title","Collection Type","Description - Side A - 1","Collection Number","Production Year","Purchase Place","Purchase Price","Location - 1","Slot - 1"
"M70001","Chateau Poop du Pap","Owned","Mild fruity with a hint of pepper","321","1789","Estate Sale","$4.20","Cabinet 47","Bin 12"

The first row is the field names in CSV Export format, and the second and subsequent rows are the profiles. Just a simple silly example, but I hope you get the idea. Field order does not matter, just the spelling. Also keep in mind that many Profiler fields have a set of specific allowed vaues, and are not general text entry. You can use any subset of fields generated by CSV Export, using either the 2.4 format, or the Custom column format.

How are the data organized now?

The data is stored on a common central server for all 100,000+ users.  I can pull my personal data down with various .asp APIs.  I have already created a Visual Studio routine that pulls down the bottle & label images and puts them in the DVDProfiler directory with the correct naming conventions.

I want to start using your BulkEdit utility but have run into a problem.  I manually created a 'wine' record in DVDProfiler and exported it to XML.  When I use BulkEdit to try and reimport the file I get a No DVDs found message box that says 'XML format not recognized'.  This is followed by another message box saying 'Serious error processing XML: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.'

I now have the XML Import/Export working.  One issue I noted is that only one Cast Member <Actors> get reimported and the Role and Credited As are not imported at all.

I don't remember if I addressed this. Anyway, V1.28 is available which includes recent fixes and updates.
